Voopoo’s popular Drag series grows ever bigger with the addition of the Voopoo Drag S2 and X2, which we have in for review today.
Established by ICCPP in 2016, Voopoo have grown into a world leading vaping device manufacturer, becoming one of the most recognisable, popular and well-regarded brands in the industry.
At present, Voopoo sell into more than 70 countries and regions around the world, establishing a large presence in the UK, US and the EU amongst others.
Voopoo have a huge range of different devices and systems to choose from, appealing to beginner vapers as well as seasoned, experienced vaping enthusiasts.
Both the Voopoo Drag S2 and X2 join illustrious stable mates such as the Drag H40, Drag Mini as well as the original Drag X and Drag S kits.
Voopoo have been kind enough to send over the S2 and X2 and in this review we will be looking at the Voopoo Drag S2.
What Can We Expect From The Voopoo Drag S2?
Voopoo’s Drag series of kits have proven to be wildly popular, renowned for ease of use and great performance. The S2 promises to build upon the groundwork laid by previous Drag kits- so expect top drawer flavour performance, big clouds and ease of use!
The latest version of Voopoo’s patented Gene chipset is present in the Drag S2, called the Gene.TT 2.0.
This offers a Smart Mode option, which will automatically detect the resistance of the coil and select the best power output for it, an RBA option (variable wattage) which will allow you to select whatever power output you wish and an Eco option to streamline battery performance when the battery level drops under 40%.
These options can be selected through a simplified and easy to use menu system.
Safety protections are all built into the device and handled by the Gene.TT 2.0 chipset and the Drag S2 has a built in 2500mAh battery that can output up to 60W of power.
USB Type-C fast charging means you’ll be able to recharge your Drag S2 battery in no time at all!
Debuting as part of the Drag S2 kit is Voopoo’s new side-filling PnP X Cartridge tank, with a top airflow design.
The PnP X Cartridge tank features redesigned PnP X coils, which have a mesh coil system with thermo-stable cotton, a 4 layer leak-proof design and these promise to offer real longevity too, with Voopoo promising that these coils can withstand 100ml of e-liquid refills, making them a cost effective and less wasteful option.
Drag S2 and Drag X2 Available
Alongside the Drag S2, the Drag X2 kit is shortly coming to market, which offers much of what the S2 does however the X2 does not have a built-in battery, going for the option of using a removable 18650 battery instead.
The X2 will also offer a bump in maximum output power, able to output up to 80W compared to the maximum 60W output of the S2.

Design and Build Quality
Seven different designs will be available for the Voopoo Drag S2, with Sky Blue, Modern Red, Colourful Silver, Glow Pink, Grey Metal, Spray Black and Pearl White available to choose from.
I was sent the Pearl White version, and I can say that it is a real looker!
Interestingly, a de-bossed vegan leather design can be found on this kit and it gives it a premium feel.
It is nice to hold in the hand and doesn’t feel slippery although it does feel a little on the weighty side. That being said, it packs a smaller form factor when compared to its larger sibling, the Drag X2.
Measurements wise, the Drag S2 sports dimensions of 122mm x 32.8mm x 28.6mm, making it a fairly compact kit. But certainly not the smallest vape mod around!
TFT Screen
A lovely, clear 0.96” TFT colour screen can be found on the Voopoo Drag S2, clearly displaying information such as the current battery level, the selected output mode, output power, resistance of the coil, voltage, a puff counter and a puff timer.
The screen displays information clearly regardless of the current light condition.
PnP X Tank
Voopoo’s newest PnP atomiser forms part of the Drag S2 kit, with the debut of the PnP X Cartridge DTL tank.
This is a tank that features an adjustable top airflow design, Polycarbonate glass, a fixed wide-bore conical drip tip (the MTL version of the PnP X Cartridge tank allows for interchangeable drip tips) and a side filling port.
Plug and Play Coils
A plug and play (PnP) coil system is located at the base of the tank and the coils pleasingly sit flush with the bottom of the tank when inserted.
No traditional 510 connector is found on the Drag S2, it uses Voopoo’s PnP technology meaning that a magnetic connector is present to facilitate contact between the mod and the tank.
The tank snaps into place satisfyingly and is easy to remove- no twisting and turning needed here, just pop the tank on and off.
This technology does however mean that you are limited to using PnP X Cartridge tanks, you won’t be able to use previous PnP tanks or tanks from other manufacturers.
Build quality overall feels very good indeed, buttons are easy to access and operate with one hand. There’s no button rattle present – they feel clicky and are responsive, and the lovely finish present on the mod itself has been resistant to scratches so far!
Quick Start Guide
Before beginning to use the Voopoo Drag S2, you’ll want to fill up the PnP Cartridge X DTL tank with e-liquid, and charge the device and I’ll cover how to do this in the respective sections down below.
To turn on the mod, you need to press the fire button five times in quick succession. Be warned however, you need to press it five times very quickly! The same goes for turning the device off. You can also lock it when not using it, by holding down the power and up buttons.
Accessing the menu is done by holding both the up and down buttons. Within the menu screen you will find:
- ‘mode’, which allows you to choose between Smart, RBA and Eco modes
- ‘puff reset’ which will reset the puff counter
- ‘about device’ which displays the chip ID and level code
- ‘exit’ which will bring you back out of the menu screen.
Smart Mode
Smart mode will allow the Gene.TT 2.0 chip to automatically select the power output based on the resistance of the coil, however you can still adjust the power output in smart mode if the recommended setting is not to your liking.
If you try to exceed the maximum recommended power output (for example, trying to set the power output above 40W when using the 0.3ohm coil) it will bring up a “max power” warning on screen and you won’t be able to go beyond the maximum recommended power level.
Smart mode is pretty accurate, and I tend to just leave the device set to this!
RBA Mode
RBA mode allows you full control over the power output of the device, so you can set the power output to whatever you desire.
Eco Mode
Eco mode comes in handy when the battery level drops below 40%, as it will eke out a bit more battery life from the device.
Operation
When you are ready to vape, simply hold down the power button and inhale. The coil heats up virtually instantaneously, with no discernible lag when pressing the power button.
Safety protections are built into the device and are handled by the Gene.TT 2.0 chipset.
Safety protections present are overtime protection, output over-current protection, low battery protection, over temperature protection, overcharge protection and short-circuit protection.
The device software is upgradeable and you can do this by plugging the USB-Type C cable into the device and into your computer and visiting Voopoo’s website.
How To Fill The PnP X Cartridge DTL Tank
Filling the PnP X Cartridge DTL tank is made easy with the side filling design.
- Remove the tank from the mod
- Locate the silicone filling port cover towards the base of the tank
- Pull this back then fill through the now-exposed filling port, making sure not to overfill the tank which will result in juice leaking out.
The filling port itself is generously sized, allowing you to slot in your e-liquid bottle nozzle easily. Once done, just pop the filling port cover back over the filling port.
Changing The PnP X Coils
Changing coils is very easy too, thanks to Voopoo’s PnP design.
- You just pull out the old coil from the base of the tank
- Slot in a new one.
If you are using a new coil for the first time, it is a good idea to allow the tank to stand for five minutes after filling, to allow e-liquid to fully soak into the coil.
This helps avoid any nasty dry, burnt hits and improves coil longevity.
How Does The Voopoo Drag S2 Perform?
0.3ohm coil Performance
The 0.3ohm coil comes with a recommended power output setting of 32-40W and Voopoo state that it is for both MTL and DTL vaping.
That being said, I didn’t think it was all that suitable for a MTL vape with the airflow closed down and MTL vapers would be better off investing in the 0.6ohm PnP X coil which is available separately.
However this coil really shines with restricted DTL vaping. I’ve mainly been using this coil in the 37-40W range, with the airflow set at around 1/3 open and the flavour is outstanding. Vapour production is still pretty sizeable too!
0.2ohm coil Performance
If you want a warmer vape, a less restricted DTL hit and better cloud production, then the 0.2ohm coil will be for you! This one is recommended for higher VG e-liquids and for use in the 40-60W range.
The same great flavour found on the 0.3ohm coil is present here, albeit slightly warmer and this kicks out some seriously decent dense clouds with the airflow open!
Lifespan of the coils has been fantastic, I’ve been using these interchangeably with the Voopoo Drag X2 over the past couple of weeks and I still haven’t got through either coil yet.
This is a big plus point, as it means less money spent on replacement coils and less wastage. They’ve both handled 70% VG /30% PG juice perfectly, as well as 60/40 and 50/50 mix ratios.
Alongside the 0.2ohm and 0.3ohm coils, you’ll also be able to get your hands on 0.15ohm and 0.6ohm coils.
We’ve yet to try any of the other PnP X coils, as they are due to launch alongside the Drag S2 and X2. These will only be compatible with tanks in the PnP X ecosystem.
A MTL (Mouth to Lung) kit will also be available, but the MTL option will only be available in Italy, Germany and France.
Airflow
A top airflow design is used on the PnP X Cartridge DTL and adjusting this is as easy as rotating the top of the tank. The airflow control is smooth and once you have set your airflow preference it will stay in place until you next rotate it.
The airflow intakes are quite large and when the airflow is fully open you get a loose DTL hit with plenty of vapour production! Setting it to half open will give a restricted DTL hit and you can even get a mouth to lung hit by closing the airflow right down until it is barely open.
Clouds are the order of the day here, as this tank really kicks out the vapour at higher wattage settings. You’ll still get big, dense clouds of fog even with the airflow closed down too.
My own preference has been to set the airflow at about 1/3 open, this still gives me a restricted DTL hit with excellent flavour and it still chucks out the clouds too. Vapour production is so good, I’ve even been banned from using it in the car with the other half!
Charging
On the front of the device, just below the power adjustment buttons, is a USB Type-C port. You get a USB Type-C charging cable included in the kit. Just simply plug the cable into the port and find yourself a suitable power source.
The charge level will be displayed clearly on screen whilst the Drag S2 is charging up, showing you a precise battery charge percentage.
5V/2A charging is supported, meaning that the Drag S2 charges up very quickly, you really don’t have to hang around long waiting for it to charge!
Overcharging protection is built in and it will cut off charging once the battery has reached 100%.

Final verdict
I’m really impressed with the Voopoo Drag S2 kit, it has performed pretty faultlessly over the couple of weeks that I have been testing it out.
This kit will be a great choice for someone looking to step up from pod style devices and beginner kits plus I feel that it will also appeal to seasoned vapers who might be looking for a new daily driver or a handy backup to their main device.
The speed that it charges the battery is a real bonus too!
The PnP X Cartridge DTL is a big improvement on Voopoo’s previous PnP Pod tanks, with the improvements in flavour and vapour driven by the excellent PnP X coils and the new top airflow design.
I have had no leakage from the tank either and only a minuscule amount of condensation collection around the connector.
Prior to getting my hands on this, I had been using the Voopoo Drag H40 kit and I can safely say that there is a night and day difference in performance. The flavour in particular is a huge improvement and I can pick up flavour notes in some of my all day vapes that I didn’t even realise were there before!
For now, this will be my kit of choice for carrying around with me, based on how good the performance of this device is. Great job Voopoo!
This will be available in the UK at a price point of around £34.99 depending on which retailer you go to, which I feel represents fantastic value for money for a kit that performs so well.
If you like the sound of the Voopoo Drag S2, but you don’t feel that the maximum output power of 60W will do it for you, then it is well worth having a look at the Voopoo Drag X2. This offers virtually the same specs and performance, with the same excellent PnP X Cartridge DTL tank, and the scope to go up to 80W.
