I’ve got an absolute beast of a kit to look at in today’s review thanks to Voopoo. The latest addition to Voopoo’s famous Drag range, the Voopoo Drag 5!Voopoo Drag 5 review

For those that somehow may not have heard of Voopoo before, they were established by ICCPP in 2016 and are based out of China.

In that time their growth has been huge, they are truly classed as an industry titan and are one of the world leaders when it comes to manufacturing vaping devices.

We’ve been very fortunate to be able to have a look at a lot of Voopoo’s most recent releases, such as the Drag S2, Argus P1s, Argus G2 Mini and most recently, the superb Argus E40.

What Can We Expect From The Voopoo Drag 5?

Building upon the success of its predecessor, the Drag 4, Voopoo have redesigned the chassis of the Drag 4 device and included their newest high powered sub ohm tank, the Voopoo Uforce-X, to take full advantage of the maximum 177W output of the Drag 5 device!Voopoo Drag 5 with Uforce X tank

Starting off with the Drag 5 device, alongside the 5-177W of power that you have at your disposal, you have the latest version of Voopoo’s smart Gene TT2.0 chipset which offers four different vaping modes including smart, RBA, Eco and temperature control.

A smartly designed C-Frame sliding battery cover gives you easy access to the battery compartment, which takes two 18650 batteries.

Just one 18650 won’t do when it comes to powering this beast of a kit!voopoo drag 5 in box

And the battery evaluation system allows you to check up on the health of your batteries, with the Gene TT2.0 chipset telling you whether your battery is suitable for continued use, enabling smarter management of your device. Type-C 5V/3A battery charging is also present.

Voopoo’s Uforce-X tank is compatible with their latest ecosystem of coils, the PnP X coil range which boast a mesh coil system with thermo-stable cotton, a 4 layer leakproof design and can withstand up to 100ml of e-liquid refills before they need to be changed.uforce x tank pnp x

PnP X coils are available in 0.15ohm, 0.2ohm, 0.3ohm and 0.6ohm options so they have options there for mouth to lung, restricted direct lung and direct to lung vaping options.

Not sure what those terms mean? Then check out our guide to vaping styles.

Alongside compatibility with the PnP X range of coils, the Uforce-X tank is designed to withstand high powered sub ohm vaping sessions, has a 2ml (TPD version) or 5.5ml (non-TPD version) capacity, a sliding top filling mechanism and massive dual airflow intakes for dense cloud production.

This is a kit designed for huge clouds and big flavour!

It’s been a fair while since I’ve had a high powered kit to get stuck into, and with Voopoo making some of the best vape mods in recent times I was really excited to take a look at the Voopoo Drag 5!

Let’s have a deeper look at this set-up, as always all views are my own…

Kit Contents

kit contentsI absolutely love the rose gold coloured presentation box that the Voopoo Drag 5 comes in, this really feels like you have purchased a real high end product here.

Inside this box you’ll find-

  • Voopoo Drag 5 Device
  • Voopoo Uforce-X tank
  • Spare Glass Tank Section
  • Voopoo PnP X 0.15ohm coil
  • Voopoo PnP X 0.3ohm coil
  • User Manual

Including a spare glass tank and replacement silicone seals is an excellent addition from Voopoo, giving you spare parts at no additional cost to yourself.

It’s quite rare that a company includes a spare tank section for you, rather than making you buy a new tank section or even a whole tank if you break the tank section, so hats off to Voopoo for this.

Design and Build Quality

Seven colour finishes are available for the Drag 5 kit, with Black, Silver, Gradient Blue, Gradient Brown, Green, Sakura Pink and Sunset Orange available.

Five out of the seven kits will come with a black Uforce-X tank, but if you purchase the Silver or Sakura Pink versions you will get a silver Uforce-X tank.voopoo drag 5 leather side

I was sent the Sunset Orange kit for review and oh my, it is an absolute stunner!

The zinc alloy gradient colour finish absolutely shines in direct light and the checkerboard finish on the leather C-Frame battery cover is simply sumptuous. This is a real head turner of a vape kit that is for sure, it is a real beauty!

Sizing

Now this isn’t the smallest, pocket friendly kit around, it weighs 223g in total alone and that is without two 18650 batteries inside. But, for a dual 18650 battery mod, that is to be expected.drag 5 in hand

That size does mean that it is very robust however. Pleasingly, the finish doesn’t seem to be a magnet for fingerprints or micro scratches, but it is recommended to clean the leather part with a soft cotton cloth from time to time.

OLED Screen

On the front of the Drag 5 is a large, clear screen which allows you to clearly see information such as the power setting, output mode, battery life, puff count, output voltage, resistance and a puff timer.voopoo drag 5 oled screen

I found the screen was easy to see in any light condition. You can also choose to have a flame animation play as you take a puff if you so wish!

Above the screen is a large power button which is satisfyingly clicky with a short amount of travel and below the screen is the multifunctional flip switch, the plus and minus buttons and the USB-C charging port.

Battery Compartment

Voopoo have designed one of the best battery covers I have come across on a device yet, with a sliding C-Frame kept in place by a magnetic connection.battery cover slide

This has a leather panel with a lovely, smooth feel to it, and it is functional too- allowing you to access the battery compartment easily simply by sliding it open.

You can actually remove and replace the C-Frame battery cover too with a range of different options to purchase separately, allowing you another level of customisation over your kit.battery compartment drag 5

There’s a battery ribbon found within the battery compartment, and you would be well advised to use this when inserting the required two 18650 batteries, as the batteries fit very snugly into the compartment and you’ll struggle to get them back out again without using the ribbon!batteries in the drag 5 by voopoo

510 Connection

And oh, what is this, a 510 connector on the top of the Drag 5 device?!

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen one of these on a kit, mainly because most manufacturers seem to use a proprietary magnetic connection for the device and tank, essentially limiting you to using the included tank or a very small selection of tanks.510 connection

If you haven’t come across a device with a 510 connector before, essentially you screw your tank into the device rather than clipping it in with a magnetic connection.

This means that you can use any tank on this device that has a 510 connector, not just the Uforce-X tank that is included with the kit.

510 base of uforce x tankWhich is handy if you don’t get on with the Uforce-X tank and want to use a different one!

It wasn’t all that long ago that all devices used to come with a 510 connector!

The Uforce-X tank is manufactured from stainless steel and has a glass tank section which is a bit of a rarity these days, as most tanks seem to come with a polycarbonate tank section as it is cheaper!

This gives you a clear view of how much e-liquid you have left in the tank. You also get a spare glass tank section included in the kit, handy if you manage to damage the original one.tank on voopoo drag 5 mod

A 5.5ml capacity is found on the non TPD version, and the TPD version has a 2ml capacity.

My only gripe with this tank section is that the 5.5ml capacity version slightly overhangs the sides of the Drag 5, which might irk you if you are OCD about that sort of thing.

On the top of the tank is a wide bore drip tip, designed to allow a large amount of vapour production into your mouth, and this can be removed if you wish to use your own one. wide bore drip tipThere’s also the sliding filling port cover and the two huge airflow cutouts, as well as a threaded 510 connector found at the base.sliding fill port

Compatible with the PnP X series of coils from Voopoo, you can easily install your coil through the base of the tank. Just unscrew the base, slide the coil in, replace the base and you are good to go.

Quick Start

Two high-capacity 18650 batteries are required to power the Drag 5 and they need to be inserted before use, make sure you grab high amp 18650 batteries from a reputable battery vendor and pair these up!

So, you’ve got your batteries installed and your tank filled, what next?

Well, you need to turn the Drag 5 on, and this is done by clicking the power button five times, or by toggling the multi-function switch if this is set to ‘on/off’.buttons on drag 5 vape mod

Plus and minus allow you to adjust the output power (or temperature limit if in temperature control mode) and if you want to lock that setting in then quick press the power button three times.

Accessing the menu is done by holding down the plus and minus buttons. The first option you are presented with is the mode adjustment, which allows you to switch between four different output modes. These are-

  • Smart mode, whereby the Gene TT2.0 chipset will automatically select a power output for you determined by the resistance of your coil, though you’ll still be able to adjust the power output manually if you so wish.
  • RBA mode, which allows you to select power output yourself from 5W all the way up to 177W!
  • Eco mode, whereby power saving mode will be activated and output will be limited to conserve battery life.
  • TC mode, this is temperature control mode and you need to use a coil suitable for
temperature control to use this. The Drag 5 supports Ni200, Titanium, SS316 and SS430 coils in this mode and has a temperature range of 200-600F/100-315C. Holding down the fire and minus buttons will allow you to switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius, holding down fire and plus allows you to adjust the wattage output from 5-80W.

Other menu options after this are:

  • ‘Colour’- allowing you to change the UI colour
  • ‘Bat Eval’ which accesses the battery evaluation section which tells you about the health of your batteries
  • ‘Puff Reset’ which resets the puff counter
  • ‘Theme’ which gives you the option of turning the flame animation on or off
  • ‘About Device’ which gives you device information.

Software is also upgradeable, you’ll need to use the included USB-C cable for this, plug the Drag 5 into your computer and download the latest software upgrade from Voopoo’s official website.

Six safety protections are also built into the device, with 8 second vaping overtime, short-circuit, overcharge, output over-current, low battery and chip over-temperature protections all present.

How To Fill The Uforce-X Tank

Filling the Uforce-X tank is an absolute dream thanks to the sliding top fill system, and you don’t even need to remove the tank in order to fill it up.filling the voopoo uforce x tank

Just use your thumb (or finger) to slide the top of the tank open, right where it says ‘Push’ (handy that!) and the filling port will be revealed. It’s very smooth and easy to slide open.

You’ve got ample room to pop your bottle nozzle into the filling port, just take care not to overfill the tank as e-liquid will spill out of the top airflow cut-outs if you do.

how to change the coilIf you are using a new PnP X coil for the first time, pop a couple of drops of e-liquid directly into the coil through the drip tip, and let e-liquid sit in the tank for five minutes before having a puff on it.

This helps the cotton in the coil fully absorb the e-liquid and cuts down on dry hits, prolonging the lifespan of your coil.

Charging

As with any device that uses removable batteries, it is always advisable to use an external dedicated battery charger and charge up your batteries outside of the device where possible.

That being said, the Drag 5 does support Type C 5V/3A charging, so if you are in a bind you can plug in the included USB Type-C charging cable and give your Drag 5 a charge.

How Does The Voopoo Drag 5 Perform?

Included with the kit is the 0.15ohm and 0.3ohm Voopoo PnP X coils, and I’ll look at the performance of these below-

0.3ohm coil performance

I must say the 0.3ohm PnP X coil has been my preferred option since I got the Voopoo Drag S2 and X2, and it is still my preferred option with the Uforce-X tank.

I prefer to vape restricted direct to lung hits in the 35-40W region and the 0.3ohm PnP X coil is right at home with this. I get an incredibly tasty, warm vape that still kicks out an impressive level of vapour, but not an antisocial amount!

This coil really makes my favourite dessert vapes sing too, delivering all the flavour notes to my palate and pushing some rebuildable atomisers hard in terms of flavour quality. It is an excellent coil!

0.15ohm coil performance

If you really want to crank up the Drag 5, and utilize the power that it is capable of, then you are going to want to use the 0.15ohm coil for this.

At high wattages, you need a coil that can wick high VG e-liquid quickly and keep up, and this is definitely capable of doing just that.

This is where you get seriously big clouds and a really warm, flavoursome vape!

I will say though that the Drag 5 will get pretty hot when running it at high wattage, you’ll feel it in the device and the Uforce-X tank, and the vape will be quite hot to the taste as well. To try and minimize heat, vape in short bursts and keep the airflow open as wide as possible.

Coil Lifespan

Voopoo state that the PnP X coils can withstand up to 100ml worth of e-liquid refills, but this will be variable depending on a number of factors, such the mix ratio of your e-liquids, the level of sweetener in them, the output power and even how long you take a draw for, to name but a few factors!tank on voopoo drag 5 mod

I’ve got a fair bit of experience with the PnP X coils as I have been using these regularly to this day since I first got the Voopoo S2 and X2 kits, and on the whole you are looking at some of the best lifespan on the market from experience.

Mine will average around 10 days to 2 weeks before needing to be replaced!

Battery Life

Again, this is going to be variable depending on the capacity of the batteries that you are using, as well as the resistance of your coil and the selected power output.

For example, I use Molicell 2800mAh 25A batteries in my Drag 5 and with the 0.4ohm coil set to 38W I will get just about a day’s worth of pretty heavy vaping from that.

If I use the 0.15ohm coil and nudge the power up, towards the 100W mark, then I’m looking at a matter of a few hours use rather than a full day!

Airflow

At the top of the Uforce X tank are two huge airflow intakes, and to adjust the airflow you simply rotate the airflow control ring around the airflow.airflow close uforce x

This is buttery smooth and I haven’t had any issues with it accidentally adjusting in my pocket and losing my selected airflow setting.

Having the airflow set to fully open will give you a very airy, unrestricted direct to lung hit and some absolutely huge vapour production, especially when running the 0.15ohm coil and chucking some power through it!

You can close the airflow right down to a mouth to lung hit if that is your preference, but really this tank shines for direct lung hits and restricted direct to lung hits.voopoo drag 5 with uforce x tank

I only have the airflow open around a third with my preferred 0.3ohm coil and I find that is plenty for me, I get a perfect restricted lung hit and plenty of dense vapour.

This is a proper cloud chucker of a tank so be prepared to fill up a room with vapour in no time at all, I’d recommend driving with the window right down if you are using this in your car!

Pros

  • A very powerful kit!
  • Compatible with Voopoo’s existing PnP X range of coils
  • Fantastic looking kit
  • Well-designed battery door cover
  • Lots of different options and settings to adjust
  • Sliding top filling system makes refilling a breeze
  • Excellent flavour from the Uforce-X tank
  • PnP X coils have a long lifespan
  • Huge vapour production!
  • 510 threading on the device allows you to use different tanks
  • Spare glass tank section and silicon seals included with the kit
  • Large, clear screen

Cons

  • It’s a pretty large kit, definitely not a discreet one!
  • Will leak out of the airflow holes if overfilled
  • Glass tank will be prone to shattering if dropped
  • Glass tank section also overhangs the sides of the Drag 5 device on the non-TPD version
  • Uforce-X tank gets through a lot of e-liquid!
  • Gets hot at high wattages

Final Verdict

Now, not only is this one powerful kit, and a very welcome addition to the ever expanding Drag range, this is one great looking vape mod too!

I absolutely love the styling and looks of the Drag 5 device, with this being a genuine stunner and I really do love the sliding C-Frame battery cover.

I will definitely be buying a couple of replacement battery door covers when they are available in the UK and switching up the look of my Drag 5.

Alongside the great looks, I’ve got more power than I ever need from this device. I’m quite happy tooting along on the 0.3ohm coil in the region of 40W but it’s nice to crank it up now and again and really blast out some clouds!

I get great flavour too from the Uforce-X tank alongside massive clouds, and that is mainly in part down to the PnP X range of coils.

I’m glad Voopoo kept running with these and didn’t design another new range of coils for the Uforce-X tank, as the PnP X range is one of my favourite ranges of coils and I have plenty I had already purchased in the past for my Drag S2 kit.

This device has become a daily carry for me and since I received it from Voopoo I have found it hard to put down. It’s certainly helped me blast through some of my shortfill e-liquid backlog that I have built up!

At the time of writing, I can’t see a UK price listed for the Voopoo Drag 5, as it is not currently available for release yet and most vendors just have a placeholder listing for it.

I would expect that you wouldn’t be paying much more than about £50-£60 for this, just going by the RRP for the Drag 4, and you will get a lot of device for your money here.

Have you bought the Voopoo Drag 5? What did you think? Let us know in the comments below.

Vaping full time since 2012, started on cigalikes for a while then curiosity got the better of me and I moved onto an vape pens, a month or two later I was seeing people walking around with these interesting shiny tubes and I thought 'I gotta get one of those'. Before I knew it a trip down to my local B&M got me my first VW mod, an Innokin SVD, paired with an iClear 30, and I was hooked.
