The Voopoo Alpha Zip is part of the series of mods they call Alpha, surprisingly enough! The range, so far, includes the Alpha One, Alpha Zip Mini and the Alpha Zip Pod Kit.
VooPoo based in China, in 2017 and with their acquisition of US brand WoodyVapes they have bought us some really interesting gear, most notably the excellent Drag Series of mods.
You can check out our review for them, after reading this review though right 🙂 – Drag 157W, Drag 2, Drag Mini and their latest the Drag Baby Trio. and Drag Nano.
What Can We Expect From the Alpha Zip Kit by VooPoo?
I have always been a big fan of VooPoo products. Why? Because when it comes down to it VooPoo produce some of the better regulated kits out there on the market. Their products have a reputation for being accurate with the inclusion of the Gene Chipset.
The Alpha Zip Kit is an 180w dual 18650 TC battery box mod that comes with the very popular Maat Tank as a topper.
The whole kit gives off an aura that’s bold and very shiny with double decorated panels. Under the hood we have the Gene Fit chip which we first saw introduced in the Drag 2.
With the included Maat Tank I can see some really large tasty clouds in my immediate future lol.
I received the Locomotive design for review; but with 4 other designs I’m sure your find one to suit you.
So what do we think of the Alpha Zip Kit? Let’s go and take an up and close look at the kit.
This product was sent to us for the purpose of review. As always my thoughts and views are my own after a considerable testing period.

Design and Build Quality
The Kit come presented nicely in a card box, the mod comes wrapped in a dust jacket, the kit has quality spares as per norm with VooPoo.
Alpha Zip Mod
The Alpha Zip reminds me very much of the original Drag 157w albeit with a slightly different body style.
Made of Zinc Alloy, Stainless Steel and Plastic, the overall design and quality of the Alpha Zip (which is extremely good) would lead me to believe I was looking at a higher end mod if I didn’t already know the RRP.
The mod measures in at 85mm by 51mm with a tank diameter of 25mm. The body has a Silver frame and distinctive panels.
Workface
The mod has a large fire button with an X cut into it. A large OLED screen with a large font, below the screen you have the normal adjustment buttons and micro USB port for firmware updates.
Top and Bottom of the device
The top of the mod has a stainless steel 510 connection that is almost centre weighted. The threading is well turned, the pin is gold plated and spring loaded.
On the bottom of the device you will see battery venting as well as the normal safety marks and design info plus battery door thumbnail cut out.
Battery door and Sled
The battery door is held in place by 2 strong magnets seated in the door they match up to those under the sled. The inside of the door is coated to protect your batteries. BTW, there is no movement once the door is in place as there is a raised rim to the door!
The distinctive panels come in 5 different designs.
The battery sled is made of plastic, it’s clean with clear markings for battery orientation.
The contact points are gold plated with the upper most points being spring loaded, a ribbon is attached for easy battery removal.
MAAT Tank
We have already got a full review for the Maat tank, I don’t want to detract and can’t add much more to Red Beards excellent summary of this outstanding tank!
Only to say that the quality and design of this tank is one of the best I have ever used and for me to say that is a miracle where a stock tank is concerned!
The tank is made of stainless steel, Pyrex and Delrin and dismantles into 6 parts including the coil.
Airflow
The tank gets its name from the airflow (AF), MAAT stands for “Middle Adjustable Airflow Tank”. The 3 adjustable slots in the middle of the tank make for quite an airy draw.
Mouth Piece, Glass and Threads
You get one pre installed sleeve style Delrin drip tip with the kit.
Two glass tubes, the bubble glass was pre installed on mine with the straight glass in the box. The liquid capacity is 4ml standard or 2ml in the EU, depending on which version you buy.
Fill Port and Coils
The fill port is opened by a small button. Find the fill port cover post pin, and the button is opposite.
The cover is spring loaded so pushing this button the port will slide smartly open, the tank is hard to fill with larger bottles, due to the mouthpiece post getting in the way.
Two coils are supplied with the Maat tank they are both a different gauge of mesh MT-M1 0.13Ω rated at 60 to 85W and MT-M2 0.2Ω rated at 55 to 80W
How Does The Voopoo Alpha Zip Perform?
First up.. Let’s go over the workings of the tank and mod.
Quick Start Guide
Maat tank
I recommend running the liquid down a little before changing your coil.
- Unscrew the connection base from the tank to change coils.
- Prime the coil by dropping a few drop of e-liquid onto the cotton within the coil.
- Simply push the new coil into the body of the tank.
- Reassemble the tank, fill with liquid and screw on to the Alpha Zip Mod, leave for a few minutes so the coil can soak up more liquid.
Alpha Zip Mod
Remove the battery door and insert your 2 x 18650 batteries.
5 clicks of the fire button will turn the device on and off
Menu System Basics
- Click the fire button 3 times to switch modes; Power, Fit, Temp
- Hold both adjustment buttons to enter the function menu
- Press fire button and + together to lock and unlock the device
- Press the fire button an – together to flip the screen
Safety Protections
The mod includes 8 protections these include:-
- Timeout protection 10s
- Over-temperature protection
- Over-current protection
- Overcharge protection
- Over discharge protection
- Short circuit protection
- Balanced charging
Flavour and Vapour
For this example I will be using the pre installed MT-M2 0.2Ω coil in the tank and have fill up with Pocket Fuel ” Pink Fizz”, I will be using the 0.2Ω coil which gave me the best balance between flavour, warmth and clouds.
0.2Ω Coil at 55/80w
Starting out at 55W and the AF wide open, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a warm flavoursome vape with dense vapour straight off the bat from the Maat tank.Bumping the watts up to 80w, in 10w increments, I found that the vapour gets extremely hot as does the tank. However, as it’s made of SS the tank does cool quite quickly. The flavour sort of petered out for me around 70w. My go to with this tank and coil is up to 65w.
I have been using this kit for around 2 weeks and the flavour from the coil is more or less the same as when I first started vaping it, in fact it has just dropped slightly as I write this. So pretty good going.
Battery Life | Weight | Airflow Ring
I have been using Samsung 30q’s in the device, and have managed a good 3.5 to 4hrs of constant use.
The mod is rather heavy once the batteries and tank are installed which might be a downer for some.
One thing I did find was that the airflow ring has become a little loose in the time I have been using the tank but is still tight enough to hold position.
Pros
Alpha Zip Mod
- Very good quality – Excellent manufacture
- Very good design
- Easy to use
- Easily understood menu system
- Good battery life
MAAT Tank
- Good looking tank
- Excellent coil life
- Good flavour and vapour production
Cons
Alpha Zip Mod
- No concerns at all with this mod
MAAT Tank
- Drip tip style (it’s a cover I can’t use my own 810 tips)
- Fill port
- AF ring has become a little loose with use
Final Review Verdict
To be honest I found it hard to find points I didn’t like about the Voopoo Alpha Zip Kit, the size of the whole kit is perfect for me and my meaty hands, although I can see where some might not like the weight! Overall I think VooPoo have done a stellar job with both the mod and the tank, I would highly recommend this kit.
Would I buy the Voopoo Alpha Zip kit if it got lost or damaged? One word folks! “Yes”
Have you used this kit? We’d love to here your thoughts in the comments below!
This is a great kit! I thought I’d left kits behind after five years of vaping experimentation, but when my Asmodus mod died the local shop had this kit in stock for £32 which was £1 less than the cheapest standalone mod. So now I’ve got a MAAT tank as well as my regular Innokin Ares MTL. Can’t wait to get making the same juices in sub-ohm and MTL ratios for comparison!
