Vapefly Gungnir Kit Review – A Popular Tank Gets A Brand New Mod

The Vapefly Gungnir kit is a mini compact box mod and comes topped with the Galaxies stock coil tank.

Vapefly is a growing vape company established in 2017 and are based in China.

Vapefly have quite a large catalogue for a company that is only just over 2 years old.

Their previous products include: the Pixie RDA, the Galaxies MTL RDTA, the popular Galaxies MTL RTA, the the Brunhilde RTA and not forgetting the the Galaxies MTL starter kit we reviewed not long ago.

What Can We Expect From the Vapefly Gungnir Kit?

Mini compact box mods have been hugely popular for a while now.

A couple of my personal favourite little mini sized mods are C.O.V Mini Volt and the Vaporesso Target Mini.

However, today I’m talking about the Vapefly Gungnir Kit!

The device itself is marketed as Waterproof, Dustproof, and Shockproof, yes just like the GeekVape Aegis X.

It has an IP67 coating, however the Gungnir mod is much, much smaller than any of the aegis mods, around the size of a Zippo lighter.

The device has a long life internal 950mAh battery and will fire up to 30w – with the added bonus of a fast charge USB-C port.

The Gungnir comes with the Galaxies MTL stock coil tank as a topper.

This is a very popular little tank, which when filled, has a 2ml juice capacity.

The tank has bottom airflow and has a simple top fill system.

The Galaxies tank is suited ideally for use with high nicotine 70/30 liquids or Nic Salt liquids.

So what are my thoughts on the Vapefly Gungnir kit?

Is this really just for beginner’s?

Or will the more experienced vapers be seriously Gung Ho with it?

Let’s find out with an up and close look.

Design and Build Quality

The Kit comes nicely displayed in a box with a paper sleeve.

As you can see, the sample kit I have is the black version.

Vapefly Gungnir Kit

Mod

Measuring in at 54.3mm tall with a tank diameter of 24.8mm.

It’s width is 34.9mm – with an overall height with the tank attached of around 98mm – making this tiny little thing ideal for your pocket or purse.

The body of the device is made of aluminum alloy covered with an IP67 rubber waterproof coating.

One side of the device has a USB charge Port (USB-C) which is covered by a very thick rubber bung, the bung has been inscribed with Vapefly.

The opposite side has the devices name Gungnir.

The rubber coating makes for a very pleasant and comfortable feel in the hand!

Vapefly have printed the safety marks on top of the mod, and the 510 threading has been turned very well and is made from stainless steel and has a spring loaded gold plated contact pin.

On the bottom of the mod you will note 6 battery vent holes.

The battery is 950mAh – I was surprised to learn that it is actually an 18350 cell sealed into the device.

The front of the device has fire and rocker adjustment buttons.

The screen is very small almost too small for this old geezer and his dodgy eye-sight lol.

However, I have got to say that while very small the screen is clear and bright, and displays all the data clearly.

Galaxies Tank

I won’t go into too much detail about the Galaxies MTL Tank as we already have a full review for it.

The tank is made of Stainless Steel, Pyrex glass and a 510 Delrin mouth piece, and comes along with 2 plug and play coils.

• Ni80 0.8Ω mesh 13 to 17w coil (pre installed)
• Standard round Kanthal 1.2Ω, 9 to 12w coil

The tank fills from the top, just remove the top cap and fill your liquid around the coil.

The airflow is located at the bottom of the tank and has 5 tiny holes of various sizes, and the ring spins to 2 slots.

A wide slot for a more lose draw and a small pinhole for tighter draws.

The base of the tank unscrews to reveal the slot for the coils simply push in and pull out.

The 510 connection threading is well turned with a gold plated pin.

The design and safety info, as well as the name of the tank and a serial number, are printed on the base.

How Does Gungnir Kit Perform?

For this review, I’m using a homemade 6mg coffee/raspberry liquid and I will be using the 1.2Ω Kanthal coil.

Quick Start Guide

When changing coils in the Galaxies Tank, I recommend running the liquid to at least the half way point or risk a flood.

Galaxies Stock Coil Tank

• Turn the tank upside down and remove the base/airflow ring, insert your choice of the 2 coils provided (don’t forget to prime coil) with the kit, reassemble the tank.
• Remove the top cap and mouth piece; fill with your choice of E-liquid around the coil and re place the cap.
• Screw the tank onto the Gungnir mod. Leave the device alone for around 2 or 3 minutes to allow the coil to soak up liquid.

Gungnir Mod settings

Make sure the battery is fully charged before use!

• X5 Rapid clicks on the fire button will turn the device on and off.
• The device has 2 power settings press the power button 3 times to highlight the mode function, use the adjustment buttons to switch between, Power (watts) and Bypass (volts).
• By holding both adjustment buttons together you will lock and unlock the adjustment rocker, the mod will still fire!

Vapefly Gungnir Kit Flavour and Vapour Production

9 to 12W

Starting with 9 watts and the smallest airflow hole the draw was really quite tight (not really my style) the flavour was good and the vapour production was cool.

I opened up the airflow fully and increasing the wattage by 1 watt until 12 watts.

The flavour was very good and the vapour production was about what you’d expect from a mouth to lung tank.

Cheating somewhat I popped in a left over 0.5Ω coil I had from the Galaxies MTL starter kit.

Whilst the coils designed for this tank are basically for MTL, it is possible to get a very restricted DTL draw with 0.5Ω coil at 14 to 18w.

The vapour was a lot thicker and slightly warmer with very good flavour.

I have not used the Ni80 coil due to my allergies.

I did however get Mrs J to give it a whirl for a few hours.

Her report to me was that it fires fine but around the 16.5/17w power mark the coil starts to spit!

She preferred to vape the unit at 15w, which gave OK vapour with fair flavour.

Vapefly Gungnir Kit Battery life

I’ve got to say that the battery life of the Vapefly Gungnir kit is excellent.

I got nearly 8 hours between charges at 10w using the device with mouth to lung style and the 1.2Ω coil.

After switching to the 0.5Ω coil and using it as a restricted DTL device I still managed over 6 hours battery life.

I did take the time to test the mod with my Wasp Nano RDA with a 0.5Ω coil at 25 and 30w and bypass (pushing the full voltage of the battery through the coil) using direct to lung style.

Whilst the battery life is reduced significantly I still managed nearly 4 hours vape time.

Stress Testing the Vapefly Gungnir Kit

From waist height I dropped the mod 3 times on a stone path – it bounces really well lol!

The result was no discernible damage just a bit of grit which was easily wiped away.

I dunked the mod in a tube of water for 15 minutes – I did not find any water within the USB port and the Gungnir fired fine after drying.

I have no way to test dust proofing.

Conclusion

Like the GeekVape Aegis line of mods this little mod is more than capable of standing up to the shock of being dropped and being submerged in water for a limited amount of time!

As for Vapefly claiming it is dust proof I have no idea, however I have no reason not to believe it isn’t!

Final Review Verdict

Vapefly have done it again!

My opinion is this is an excellent little kit that will appeal to a wide variety of users, even clumsy ones like me lol.

It’s not ostentatious but it does have a character all of its own!

Would I Recommend the Vapefly Gungnir Kit ?

I recommend this as a starter kit for new vapers.

Ok it’s never going to be a massive cloud chucking kit- but as something that can be used as a second carry around, the battery life is simply great.

I can see that the mouth to lunge and stealth crowd out there will absolutely love it.

Would I buy this kit again due loss or damage?

While I don’t think there is much chance of the mod becoming damaged, maybe the tank if dropped!

If I was ever to lose the kit simply put “Yes” I would replace it, while I cannot get along with NI80 coil there are other options of coils available.
