Design and Build Quality
The Vapefly Galaxies MTL Squonk RDTA comes in a standard card box with an over sleeve, like all of the tanks from Vapefly we have been fortunate enough to review in the past, the presentation and spares in the box are top notch. The design is small at 22 x 40mm, the quality is excellent. Made of stainless steel, Pyrex glass and topped off with a frosted PMMA 510 drip tip, a classy looking RDTA.
The tank dismantles into 5 parts.
Bottom ring
Made of SS, the bottom ring is the base of the tank and screws on to the tank over the 510 thread, it has the normal information laser etched detailing and on the reverse side you have an O’ring to help stop leaks from he bottom of the tank.
Glass tank
Made of Pyrex the tank will hold 2ml of liquid – making it TPD compliant, there is a spare in the box in case of accidents.
Build Deck/Tank
This is a very interesting deck to me! The main part is made of SS with, as you might guess, a shallow well. It features 2 gold plated posts, the positive sits on a peek insulator, each post has a side slot and gold plated Allen screw for trapping your wire. You will also see 2 other screws in the center of each post these are for the internal AF valves. if you unscrew them they will make your draw looser, likewise close them for a tighter draw. You will also see a small hole in between the posts, this is your internal AF. In conjunction with the internal AF valves you will get an all over airflow to your coil, and 2 wick holes either side of the AF. You have an O’ring that sits on the outer edge of the build deck for your top cap, under this you have a small AF hole on each side of the deck. There is a post under the deck that has a squonk hole in it for liquid to be released when you push your squonk bottle, the bottom of this post is attached to your 510 or bf pin. To fill the tank without squonk you have a spring loaded fill port within the deck.
Top cap/ Airflow
Made of SS the top cap is decorated with a star chart pattern. The Galaxies has various AF holes of different sizes enabling you to precisely control your vape. 6 holes one side and 3 the other you are able turn off the side with 3 holes resulting in a tighter draw. The top part of the cap has heat fins that are designed to help keep the tank cool. The inside of the cap is domed any splash back or condensation will fall back to the cotton/coil.
Mouth piece
The Vapefly Galaxies MTL RDTA comes with a frosted PMMA 510 drip tip installed; there is also a long black delrin 510 drip tip as spare in the box.
A quick guide to coiling wicking and filling
You can change the coil and cotton without losing any e-liquid, simply pull off the top cap.
- Decide which contact pin is right for you 510 or BF (squonk) and install it
- Install your coil – make sure the tails are facing different directions
- Heat and strum the coil
- Install your cotton – I cut the tails of mine about half way down the glass tank
- Poke the cotton tails down through the wick holes
- To fill you need a needle nose bottle, press the bottle tip into the spring loaded fill port while squeezing your liquid bottle or fill up your squonk bottle and squeeze into the tank
- I would suggest you dampen the cotton and coil to get things started
Replace the top cap and place onto your desired mod – happy vaping.
How Does The Vapefly Galaxies MTL Squonk RDTA Perform?
For this review I have placed a SS316 24g 0.24Ω coil in the Galaxies RDTA with the Squonk pin installed and filled the tank and squonk bottle with “O’hm Baked Roulade” by Vapouriz Labs, I will be using the tank on my Eleaf Pico Squeeze.
Coil and Cotton Installation
This must be one of the easiest tanks I have ever had the pleasure of building on! Using the Coily Tool I measured and cut my wire tails to 4.0mm making sure the tails faced opposite directions.
I slipped them into the post slots and screwed down the screws to trap the wire, using Vapefly’s own cotton (FireBolt) that they kindly sent along for testing.Cut the cotton tail down to how you personally like it! I cut mine by measuring the cotton so that I cut the tail half way down the 2ml glass, poke through the wick holes, here I wiggled the cotton a wee bit and left an air channel so the cotton wasn’t filling the whole of the wick holes.
Fill Port
I have never seen a spring loaded fill port in my years of using different tanks (I know they are out there) what an absolute pleasure to fill!
Coupled with the BF pin you really wouldn’t know you had a 2ml tank.
Pins
Of course it’s up to you the user which pin you use “510 or BF”. I have chosen to use the BF pin for this review, because I was intrigued by the idea of using an RDTA on a squonk mod, it made for a very interesting and enjoyable time.
Experiences
The wattage on my Pico Squeeze peeks around 50w with a fresh battery; some might say that is too high to get a descent mouth to lung vape, due to the heat generated!
Not the case for me lol… I opened the internal AF valves fully and set the outer AF to both of the large AF holes (because I like a looser draw this is perfect for me).
While the MTL vape was very warm which with a NicSalt based e-liquid it’s a great vape. I was also able to experience a warm very restricted DTL vape, once the battery started to degrade in power I was able to then to start restricting the AF. I tried every AF combination available with this tank! With the smallest hole open on one side for me it was like sucking vapour with the AF closed lol, it kind of reminds me of the days of the Aspire Nautilus Mini.
Vapour and Flavour production
For a mouth to lung tank I have to say the vapour was pretty good no matter where I set the AF or the internal AF valves! The flavour, like the Galaxies MTL RTA, was top notch.
While I’m not a MTL vaper in the main, the flavour was very intense which suits me down to the ground! I would put this tank in the same category for flavour as the Vandy Vape Berserker Mini MTL RTA, the only thing that lets the tank down is the heat that is generated especially using the smallest AF hole this little sucker gets real hot real quick.
Pros
- Excellent Build quality
- Designed very well
- Beautiful tank to look at
- Flavour and Vapour production is good
- Innovative internal AF valves
Cons
- My only concern is how hot the tank gets with the smallest AF holes.
Final Review Verdict
The best of all worlds. I know there have been several squonk RDTA’s released in the past and they all suffered from problems of one kind or another and sort of went out of favour, Vapefly has really thought about this Galaxies MTL Squonk RDTA. It works and works well, easy to coil, easy to wick, easy to fill; very good flavour and vapour! I have no problem recommending this tank to all levels of vaper.
Would I buy the Vapefly Galaxies MTL Squonk RDTA again should I lose or damage this one? Yes I would.. Over the last couple of weeks testing it has entered my daily rotation and stayed there.
