Vaping Increases Chance Of Stroke Study Slammed
A study suggesting dual users that vape and smoke are at higher risk of a stroke has been rubbished by health experts.
Less than a week into the New Year and first of the sensationalist anti-vaping studies has been splashed across the media – expect many more to follow!
OK, scientists at the George Mason University in Virginia USA, looked at 160,000 dual users aged between 18 and 44.
After crunching the data, lead scientist Dr Tarang Parekh said:
It’s long been known that smoking cigarettes is among the most significant risk factors for stroke.
…our study shows that young smokers who also use e-cigarettes put themselves at an even greater risk.
This is an important message for young smokers who perceive e-cigarettes as less harmful and consider them a safer alternative.
We have begun understanding the health impact of e-cigarettes and concomitant cigarette smoking, and it’s not good.
Given very many smokers trying to quit are dual users, this is of course a direct attack on vaping as a smoking cessation tool.
Not only that, vapers trying to quit as part of a New Year resolution, may have seen this study in the media and decided to stop vaping.
UK experts have been queuing up to pick fault with the study.
Prof John Britton, Director of the UK Centre for Tobacco & Alcohol Studies and Consultant in Respiratory Medicine, University of Nottingham, said:
These findings arise from subgroup analysis involving multiple hypothesis tests and are therefore unreliable.
Contrary to the authors’ claim, this study provides no evidence that vaping increases the risk of stroke accrued from smoking tobacco.
Prof Peter Hajek, Director of the Tobacco Dependence Research Unit, Queen Mary University of London, said:
While the paper itself is careful in interpreting the finding, the press release is grossly misleading.
The study provides no justification for the claim that vaping increases the risk of stroke.
Dr Lion Shahab, Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology & Public Health, University College London (UCL), said:
The key finding that the paper highlights is that current dual users of cigarettes and e-cigarettes have a higher risk of stroke than those who only smoke cigarettes.
It is argued that this increase in risk may be due to the effects of ingredients of e-cigarettes apart from nicotine.
However, this interpretation seems to be contradicted by the fact that in this study e-cigarette users who never smoked had no higher risk of stroke than non-smokers and a reduced risk compared with cigarette smokers, consistent with no detrimental health effects of e-cigarettes.
There you have it – when it comes to vaping scare stories in the media don’t believe any of it until you are faced with the real facts 😉
Biden and Sanders Ignorant On Vaping
The two leading candidates to be the Democrats candidate to challenge Trump are painfully ignorant about vaping.
In fact both Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders reckon vaping is bad for your health and should be banned outright.
Sure they backtracked pretty quickly when challenged, however it shows yet again the high level of ignorance among US politicians about vaping.
Little wonder most politicians have been led by media scare stories and vociferous soccer-mom led anti-vape groups in the states.
Former vice-president Joe Biden said he needed:
…serious scientific data as to whether or not it has the kind of long-term damage on the lungs and it causes death before we allow it to be sold.
He backed that up a day later saying if it was found vaping nicotine based e-liquids was harmful – he would ban the industry completely.
Meanwhile Bernie Sanders – in what sources say was a ‘rambling’ statement, said:
…the evidence seems to indicate that vaping is not so good for your health.
When you have products that are not good for your health, I think you’ve got to tell that industry that they cannot produce a product which is making our kids sick.
Oh dear oh dear…
I’m sure fellow candidate and big time anti-vape group donator Michael Bloomberg lapped those up…
Once thing’s clear, and that is any future Democrat president has vaping in his or her ban sights.
Crazy New Jersey Anti Vape Campaign Launches
Vaping has the same risk as sky-diving without a parachute according to health ‘experts’ in New Jersey…
Yes really lol.
The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey [PDFNJ] has just launched a campaign targeting the state’s 3,500 schools in a bid to stem what they perceive is a teen vape epidemic.
PDFNJ Executive Director Angelo Valente said:
We want teens throughout the state to know the risks they are taking if they choose to use e-cigarettes and to encourage them to avoid using these potentially dangerous products.
Posters will appear on buses, trains and billboards and will advertise the state’s anti-vape website VapeFacts NJ…a misnomer if ever I saw one lol.
Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said:
The popularity of e-cigs and vapes among youth threatens to reverse hard-fought declines in adolescent smoking and create a new generation of nicotine addicts.
We must raise public awareness about the dangers of vaping to prevent another deadly addiction epidemic from taking root in our communities.
No facts here – just highly charged emotional rhetoric meant to scare and not educate…facts my arse to coin a phrase lol.
Anti-Vape Groups Furious At Flavoured Pod Ban!
Trump’s decision to ban all pre-filled flavoured pods except tobacco and menthol has infuriated the anti-vape brigade.
And we’re not just talking soccer-mom groups either, with some of the USA’s biggest health organizations criticizing the decision saying it means kids that vape mint will now simply move to menthol.
As I said in Sunday’s Vape News, there’s no pleasing some people.
American Academy of Pediatrics President Sally Goza said:
The guidance could have been a meaningful victory for children’s health and instead is a major missed opportunity that will still leave young people at risk for addiction.
The bottom line is that children are at nearly the same level of risk now as they were before this guidance came out, and that is a shame.
Gary Reedy, CEO of the American Cancer Society said:
Menthol is a derivative of mint, and there is little difference between these flavors.
With mint and menthol already being some of the most popular flavor choices among youth users, there’s reason to believe the popularity of menthol will only continue to rise.
Matthew Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids echoed the outrage:
Kids using mint before will use menthol tomorrow.
Decades of experience with menthol cigarettes demonstrate that menthol appeals to kids.
There is no public health justification for allowing continued sales of menthol e-cigarettes.
Scott Schlesinger is a Florida based lawyer currently suing JUUL and says:
This is one of the most powerful companies in the country.
…and they are doing all they can to come out on top.
They didn’t spend $12 billion that they are walking away from.
As long as they have menthol, they’ll be able to catch kids.
“Catch kids” – I admit that did make me chortle.
Expect this debate to rage on and on and er on.
Until that is the PMTA process kicks in and 90% + of the USA vape industry could be wiped out.
Even then as thousands lose their jobs and millions go back to smoking – I doubt these buffoons will be happy.

Myanmar Vape Ban?
A leading health expert in Myanmar [formerly known as Burma] is calling on the Government to ban vaping.
He appears to have support from some government ministers as well as the World Health Organization…no surprises there.
Dr Thein Swe, is vice president from People’s Health Foundation and said:
The most effective way is to shut down and ban.
It has to be done by government departments,.
The quickest way is to release a notification to ban.
The country’s current tobacco laws do not include vaping and this is being addressed according to U Aung Tun, health adviser for the Ministry of Health and Sports:
The ministry is expected to release regulations soon.
It is one of the points submitted to the ministry.
It will take action sooner than later.
Let’s hope it’s sensible regulations and not a complete ban.
For the record smoking related diseases kills over 65,000 people per year in the country, a staggering 17% of all deaths.
…and finally…JUUL To Sack Staff For Vaping At Work?
JUUL management and its staff are butting heads over being allowed to vape whilst at work.
Company bosses are now threatening staff with the sack and having big bucks bonuses taken away if they are caught using the controversial product on the premises!
A report in the lofty Wall Street Journal reckons JUUL employees are vaping at their desks and in corridors after a ‘vape tent’ that was promised last year failed to materialize lol.
JUUL declined to comment on the missing tent but added it was:
…committed to maintaining a smoke and vapor-free work‐place in compliance with state and local laws.
According to the Journal, even the company founders Adam Bowen and James Monsees were regularly spotted vaping in the offices – allegedly 😉
The JUUL spokesman also told online tech magazine Gizmodo:
Our policy strictly prohibits vaping in our U.S. facilities where applicable law or lease agreements do not allow vaping.
We take this commitment very seriously and take appropriate actions against violations.
Given the JUUL head office is in San Francisco – a city with a complete all things vape ban – one wonders where they’re getting them from lol.
