Smok Mag Solo Kit Design and Build Quality

For this review, I will be only concentrating on the Mag Solo mod!

We do have a separate review for the T-Air Sub Ohm tank, please check it out.

Smok sent the Blue Haze design, which has a beautiful shiny metallic finish.

Smok Mag Solo Mod

This device is slim and sleek.

Smok says that it’s delicate, but I think it’s perfect for an all-day carry-around device!

The device materials include a Zinc Alloy chassis and soft-touch Faux Leather with a smoked plastic screen. The materials certainly don’t feel cheap to me!

Measuring 43.6mm in width and 95.2mm in height, the mod weighs in at 135g (without batteries). It is slightly on the weighty side but very comfortable to hold for long periods!

The shape of the mod somewhat mimics the grip of a hand weapon, when side on that is.

From The Top

The mod has a 510 connection with well-turned threading and a spring-loaded, Gold-Plated connection pin.

This device will take atomisers with a diameter of up to 32mm!

Leather Padding

Coloured soft Faux Leather padding has been added to the back of this mod, which serves as a soft cushion for your hand. The leather has stitching which gives the device a bit of individuality!

The Chassis

The device has been made of Zinc Alloy and has a metal cradle with advertising on one side saying “Smok”. The cradle surrounds the back and sides of the mod, this has been seen on other mods by different manufacturers!

The Faux Leather has been embossed with Mag Solo.

The Workface

This device has a 0.96” TFT smoked plastic screen, with 5 colour themes.

As expected the screen shows all the normal expected information.

While bright indoors, I found the screen was hard to read in direct sunlight!

Action Buttons

The mod has a rocker-type adjustment button along with a 1.5A USB Type C charge port on the workface.

Above the screen is a metal fire/action button, when pressed it has an excellent click!

Battery Housing

Operated by a simple pull-back catch, the door has been printed with all the typical information including design and legal logos.

The door has no movement when open and with batteries in it is stable with no battery rattle.

I did have to put a little pressure on the door to close it when installing a battery!

On the inside of the door, you will see that Smok has covered the whole door with a battery connection plate, which is made of Gold-Plated Stainless Steel.

Battery Compartment

This mod will run on an 18650 or a 21700 battery.

When new, the device will have the 18560 battery adaptor installed.

If you look into the battery compartment you will see a Red “+”, this is to aid battery orientation!

The compartment has also been lined with a plastic film, which helps to avoid battery short circuits due to damaged battery wraps.

The Smok Mag Solo has been designed well, with a high-quality manufacture. It’s a sleek and beautiful device that has been well-formed and it fits the hand with comfort!

Smok Mag Solo Quick Start Guide

Today I’m going to use the mod with its intended tank – the T-Air Subtank. I have installed one of the 0.4Ω mesh coils that came with the kit.

Later I put on an RTA to test the higher output of the device!

My liquid of choice is Mango Burst from E-Juice Warehouse.

Smok T-Air Sub Ohm Tank Prep

Please follow my guide for prepping the coil and filling the T-Air Subtank here.

Smok Mag Solo Mod – Basic Operation

  • Insert a 18650 or 21700 battery into the device – following the battery orientation guide inside the mod
  • The Mag Solo can be fast charged using the 1.5Amp type C charge port and cable.

However, I like to charge my batteries with an external charger, swapping them as needed

  • 5 clicks of the fire button, will turn the device on and off

When you first turn on the device you will see the start-up screen which includes design info and firmware version!

Settings

  • Use the adjustment bar to set your wattage
  • Press the fire button 3 times to completely lock the device
  • Disabling just the adjustment buttons – press both adjustment buttons together, and you will still be able to fire the mod
  • Clear Puff Count – by pressing the fire and down buttons
  • Press the fire button and the up button to switch between the mod screens 5 themed colours (Green, Yellow, Blue, Red and White)

This mod will fire between 5 and 100W.

The Mag Solo will auto-detect your atomiser and preset the wattage to match the coil resistance!

  • Smok has included 6 protection functions such as Overheat protection, 8-second toot count and short circuit protection

How Does The Smok Mag Solo Perform?

I am very impressed by the elegance of this mod! To me, it’s almost a work of art and is well worth the price tag!

The Mag Solo has functioned well in the last few weeks I have been testing it.

It fires fast and is very comfortable in my hand!

Batteries

Using a 21700 battery in the mod is a no-brainer – it gave me almost a full day of vaping.

With a 18650 battery on the other hand, it lasted me a bit less than 3hrs. This of course is down to my vaping style!

T-Air Sub Ohm Tank

I have obtained a reasonable quality of cool vapour from this tank.

With the 0.4Ω coil installed, it has lasted me two weeks of daily vaping with a wattage range between 45-35W.

Of course, I have used the Mag Solo with other atomisers, like my Hellvape Dead Rabbit 3 RTA.

With this atomiser, I was able to test out chain vaping and the higher wattage capabilities of the Mag Solo.

Test Results

After a rapid chain vaping session, roughly for 5 minutes at 70W, the overheat protection kicked in, and the mod wouldn’t function until it cooled down!

I was able to hit the full 100W for a very hot flavoursome vape.

Pros

  • Excellent Quality and Design
  • Fast firing
  • Adequate vapour production at 45W with the T-Air Subtank
  • Very comfortable in the hand
  • 21700 compatible

Cons

To be honest I couldn’t find anything really I disliked about the Smok Mag Solo.

The T-Air Sub Ohm Tank while giving adequate vapour was a little too cool for me with the 0.4Ω coil!

Final Review Verdict

Smok has been upping their game just lately with their mods. As you will be able to see from my SMOK Morph 3 review, I thought it was excellent, and now with the new Mag Solo!

This is a sleek well-designed and beautifully presented device which has the look and feel of quality to it!

The device performed extremely well with all my tests and has now entered into my daily rotation.

I would be proud to replace the mod, should the unthinkable happen!

My recommendation for this kit is that it’s suitable for those with intermediate to higher experience!

Hi my name is Kevin, I started vaping back in 2009 mainly because my little boy at 3 years old was starting to copy the way daddy smoked a cigarette! Over the years I have gained a good amount of experience with different types of vaping hardware but I'm just a normal guy who enjoys sharing my experiences. This is why I started my Youtube vape review channel in 2014. To date the channel has had over 500,000 views. Being disabled, vaping has given me a gateway to meeting people from all different walks of life, many of those I would not have met under other circumstances. The way I look at my reviews is, if I can convince just one person to give up the stinky’s my job is done. I class myself as a tinkerer as I like to take things apart to see how they work and put them back together, yes that includes e-cigarette mods! One day I would like to be able to design my own mod. I am a dedicated father, and husband to my sweetheart of nearly 30 years! Family to me comes before anything else.
