The possibility of e-cigarettes being provided on Prescription in the UK has long been considered.
Also with the recent ban on vapes and a prescription only system in Australia, the call for a change in the UK has ramped up.
As reported in other articles, the opposition to vaping has increased with the LGA calling for Disposable Vapes to be banned and Scotland being very vocal on this issue too.
The recent Health and Social Care Committee on Youth Vaping included panellists who suggested that the UK should follow the Australian model of regulation.
Prescription Only Vapes In UK
Thankfully a few news articles caught my eye this week on the very subject.
The Independent reported that “No Plans to make vapes prescription only, Government says” and the Daily Mail also published an article with the same title.
After reading the articles I had a search around to find where these quotes came from.
And Bingo! Here they are on the Parallel Parliament website…
Basically Neil Hudson, (Conservative MP of Penrith and The Border) asked Neil O’Brien (Parliamentary Under Secretary – Department of Health and Social Care) the following…
“To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what assessment his Department has made of the potential merits of restricting the supply of vape products to be only available through pharmacies to people with a prescription.”
Neil O’Brien responded with this…
“No formal assessment has been made. There are no medicinally licensed vaping products approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. As such, the Government is not currently considering making vaping products prescription-only.”
Phew, I sincerely hope this is the case and there are no current or future plans to make Vapes prescription only in the UK!
