The Joyetech eGo Pod kit review and it seems none of their latest kits are lacking those proprietary EZ coils, be they of the plug and play variety or included within a disposable pod as is the case here.
Joyetech is classing the eGo Pod kit as a device intended for the new vaper, it’s a starter kit in other words.
The included 1.2ohm coil is a clear indication of what it’s focusing on…the Mouth to lung vaper.
This is also their first pod kit to take on the design and build of previous “pen” style starter kits such as the Joyetech eGo AIO kit, the Joyetech EXCEED D19 kit and the Joytech eGo AIO ECO kit.
So what’s it like to vape? Time we found out.
Please note: The views and opinions expressed below are my own. You’ll be reading about my own experiences of the device and they may differ from yours.
..No eGo’s were bruised during the writing of this review.
What Can We Expect From the Joyetech eGo Pod Kit?
This is one dinky little fella!
We can expect the Joyetech eGo Pod kit to be one of the most pocket friendly devices around right now.
There’s very little weight to it so you won’t necessarily be needing that belt to hold things up lol!
Don’t expect to be button bashing either. There’s no fire button because the Joyectech eGo Pod Kit relies on auto draw.
As easy as plug and play is there’s no coil changing, they’re built into the disposable pods and designed to last anything up to two weeks with moderate use.
Joyetech also tell us that we can expect to achieve anything up to two full days use on a single charge. The high resistance coil and battery capacity would heavily influence that claim.
I’ll be letting you know a little later…so here weGo!
Inside the Box
The box isn’t much bigger than the pod kit itself.
It’s very much a no nonsense affair with a lift tab on the top and the contents just sitting inside.
The embossed image of the Joyetech eGo pod kit has been completely ruined by the presence of that damn ugly TPD warning label and it’s quite possible one of the features has been lost to its drivel.
- eGo Pod battery
- eGo Pod cartridge
- Micro USB charging cable
- Quick start guide
- Warranty card
Additionally there’s a product information card relating to the use of refill nozzle sizes – they should be no wider than 3.5mm.
There’s also a reminder on the card to seek medical advice for any adverse reactions experienced while using the device.
Joyetech eGo Pod Kit Specifications and Features
There only appears to be a TPD compliant issue of the Joyetech eGo Pod kit so there’s no option of extended vaping periods between refills, unfortunately.
The device comes in four colour schemes. Black, Blue, Silver and Rainbow (under review).
- Dimensions 98mm x 19mm (diameter)
- Weight 47G
- Pod capacity 2ml
- Coil Organic cotton 1.2ohm
- Battery capacity 1000mAh integrated
- Output mode constant voltage
- Max charging current 1A
- Pod/battery connection proprietary
The Joyetech eGo Pod kit incorporates the Avatar IC 1.0 chip and utilises an array of safety features including high/low resistance protection, prevention against overheating, short circuiting, overcharge and over discharge protection.
There’s also a 10 second cut off when vaping. Just as importantly, the Avatar chip is capable of monitoring the power consumption of the internal battery, resulting in a more efficient and longer lasting charge.
As already mentioned no button presses are required because the device relies entirely on auto draw, a feature the new vaper will feel instantly at home with.
The pod features a child resistant filling method, just press the bottle nozzle into the valve to fill.
The coil has been specifically designed to handle either freebase or nicotine salt based E liquid, offering a true MTL experience.
Design and Build quality
Joyetech eGo Pod Kit the Battery Section
The battery is comprised of stainless steel with a scratch resistant plastic stopper on the base.
When checked, the battery does indeed measure exactly 19mm across the diameter, without the pod it has a height of 84mm.
The micro USB port has been placed at a sensible height on the battery and intended for vertical charging. Unfortunately the USB charge cable is extremely short meaning it’s likely to end up dangling horizontally from a wall socket!
The juice viewing window offers plenty of scope visually and measures 14.5mm (H) x 5mm (W).
The Joyetech eGo Pod kit features just one single very small air ingress port in the form of a pin hole. This should amplify the nature of a true MTL vape.
Within the battery section two small magnets are visible as well as the gold plated spring loaded coil contacts. A small channel has been cut out for airflow to pass directly beneath the coil.
Joyetech eGo Pod Kit the Pod Section
It’s completely disposable after a period of time so there are no removable parts.
It measures 36mm in height and the small bore mouthpiece has a diameter of 6mm, again, ideal for those mouth to lung draws.
The transparency will mean that liquid condensation is instantly noticeable. Being non removable it also means more care is needed to avoid foreign material from entering.
The pod is comprised of a tough PCTG material and looks capable of withstanding a few knocks or accidental drops.
The viewing window is very clear and disposable or not, this pod exudes a degree of class in my opinion, it’s been put together very well.
Joyetech has stamped the resistance value on the side of the pod as well as an expected wattage range depending on battery strength no doubt.
The underside of the pod presents us with the two aligning magnets and coil contact points.
The press to fill valve extends to around half way into the pod itself so this should guard against potential leaking issues when filling.
How To Fill the Joyetech eGo Pod Kit
Take out the pod from the battery section and remove the protective tab on the underside.
- Turn the pod on end and push the bottle nozzle into the valve
- The valve head will open. Squeeze E liquid into the pod ensuring not to overfill
- Release the nozzle from the valve and wipe any excess E liquid away
- Drop the pod back into the battery section using the magnets
- Let the E liquid soak into the cotton for around five minutes before vaping
Joyetech eGo Pod Kit – the Marriage of Battery and Pod
Just a quick note on this.
There’s a slight recess on the upper perimeter of the battery section. This is where the pod must align in order for the airflow channel to meet the underside of the coil.
It’s a fail-safe mechanism anyway because the magnets will repel each other if attempting to connect any other way. It’s something to be aware of if trying to insert the pod in a hurry. The Upends Uppen vape pen employed the same technique.
The LED on the battery will flash white to indicate a safe connection.
How Does the Joyetech eGo Pod Kit Perform?
This being a mouth to lung pod kit with a high resistance coil I opted for a thin liquid ratio of 50VG/50PG. I would suggest the possibility of getting away with a 60VG/40PG mix but certainly don’t recommend going any thicker with the VG.
My tests were carried out using NVEE Tobacco, a nicotine salt juice.
..Should be just like going back to my salad days of vaping on MTL starter kits.
My initial reaction is that I’m a little disappointed by the draw.
It’s surprisingly airy given the minute size of the single air intake port. It can be countered by placing a finger over the port but that’s not exactly an ideal arrangement.
There’s no denying the auto draw feature works a treat, never once failing and appearing quite sensitive while inhaling. Great stuff!
How’s the Flavour?
Flavour production is very good and I was able to pick out the blend of a sweet tobacco with no issues at all.
It’s a very clean, bright and tasty exhale, nothing dry or harsh as is the case with some pod kits.
In fact, the flavour lingers long after the exhale, testament to the high quality organic cotton used as well as the four sizeable wicking ports.
It’s just a shame I had no way of finding out what actual coil material is used. I can only guess it’s Kanthal.
Vapour production is bang on par for what a transitional vaper will be expecting and perfectly emulates the volume received from your average cigarette smoke.
The inhale is both quiet and turbulent free providing a nice smooth vaping experience from the nicotine salt content.
Pros
- Amazing battery performance (Avatar chip)
- Very good flavour and vapour production
- Extremely lightweight and portable
- The superb build quality of the disposable pod
Cons
- May be too airy as a MTL vape for some (subjective)
- Can be hit and miss to fill with more flexible bottle nozzles (incompatibility)
- USB charge cable is annoyingly short (subjective)
- No discernible battery venting
Final Review Verdict
Maybe I’m being hyper critical but filling can be a little messy and fiddly with the Joyetech eGo Pod Kit.
Why do I say that?
There are a host of nozzle tips available and some are shorter and fatter than others. The one included with the NVEE bottle was long and thin.
Consequently the tip had a habit of bending while inserting into the fill valve, culminating in more liquid being lost than actually being poured into the pod.
..I know! That all kind of sounded like part of a 70’s porn script! Apologies…lol
It’s also important to note that Joyetech does include a proprietary 12ml bottle with the kit on various (not all) web sites.
That’s something to seriously consider if you’re planning to purchase.
Joyetech eGo Pod Kit – Battery Performance with the Avatar Chip
I like the single LED – it remains lit for around five seconds after vaping making it easy to observe current battery strength.
As the battery strength diminishes the white LED will begin pulsing five times in succession.
When the voltage of the battery falls to 3.3V the inbuilt protection of the Avatar chip will prevent the device from functioning.
I did notice a slight loss in flavour quality as battery life reached its last few hours but vapour production held its own to the very last.
I achieved a staggering 21 hours continuous use from the battery.
Let me break things down:
- Day 1 – 8hrs use solid white LED
- Day 2 – 7hrs use solid white LED
- Day 3 – 2hrs use solid white LED, 3hrs use pulsing white LED, 1hr use rapid pulsing white LED
Since there’s no on/off feature on the device I think this is incredible performance from a single charge.
The Avatar chip effectively put the battery to sleep over night. If any drain occurred during this period I can’t say I noticed.
It will take around 90mins to recharge a depleted battery. A red LED indicates charging, and once fully charged, the LED simply stops illuminating.
The Joyetech eGo Pod Kit – Final Review Verdict
Joyetech has definitely got the transitional vaper in mind. It looks sleek with the stainless steel finish, feels very comfortable in the hand and is super pocket friendly.
The auto draw is flawless and the flavour qualities provided by the EZ 1.2ohm coil are more than sufficient for a first time vaper. That goes for vapour production too. It’s damn near perfect when using a 50VG/50PG e-liquid ratio.
I encountered no leaking issues once I’d filled using a more suitable bottle nozzle so that’s another big plus.
My only gripe is that as a dedicated MTL device with fixed airflow it may be a tad too airy.
When all’s said and done it all comes down to simplicity and ease of use.
That’s where the Joyetech eGo Pod Kit really excels.
