The Innokin Jem Pen is the latest vape pen style kit from Innokin, purely a MTL (Mouth to Lung) vape, perfectly aimed at those try to get off cigarettes and venture into the world of vaping.
Innokin have been in the game from 2011 based out of China, lots of beginner to intermediate level kits in their repertoire.
Their products are easily available in most best vape shops and beginning to appear in corner shops and supermarkets along with other well-known beginner kit brands.
The Innokin Endura T18 2 kit is available in practically every shop in the UK and recent releases such as the waterproof and shockproof Adept Zlide and the Gala Pod system are both top notch performers .
What Can We Expect From the Jem Pen by Innokin?
The Innokin Jem Pen is shorter than a BIC pen and not much wider than a AA battery.
Easily stored in the pocket, bag or just to keep in the hand. Pure MTL with a restrictive airflow (don’t expect to be hot boxing a room), the drip tip (mouthpiece) has the same diameter as a stinky making it perfect for every vape beginner.
Stainless steel construction makes it strong. Steel around the glass tank gives a little bit more protection for the inevitable drop. It comes with both a ceramic and Kanthal coil.
OK.. Let’s get int testing the device to see if it’s a good option for new vapers, or indeed the more experienced.
The Innokin Jem Pen was sent to me for the purposes of this review, I will give you my honest opinion, I have been testing this product for a couple of weeks.

Design and Build Quality
This is a simple and effective design, sleek and compact. With its steel build you can be confident that the Innokin Jem Pen will be able to take a bit of abuse.
It’s a plain design which is aimed mainly at new vapers, several simple colours are available with one funky looking Cosmos design for those a little more adventurous.
The Jem Pen is what is called an AIO (All In One). Rather than having a separate tank in which you screw the coil, like most vape devices, the coil here is screwed directly into the battery. The tank is then placed over the top.
Overall the build quality is excellent, no rattles whatsoever. The metal sleeve over the tank will help to protect that glass tank, there is not a spare one in the box.
My only issue is with the drip tip, a little knurling (for grip) around the screw cap would make it so much easier to open to fill on a hot sweaty day. Just don’t over tighten it, otherwise you’ll be looking for a couple of elastic bands to try and get some grip.
Fire Button | Airflow
The fire button is well positioned on the Jem Pen. There are 5 lights on the button in a smile shape, colour coded to give you an idea of the power left in the battery.
- Green = 60 – 100% power
- Yellow = 20 – 40%
- Red = 0 – 20%
The airflow hole is positioned above the fire button, I did catch myself a couple of times covering the air hole with my thumb when firing, but mainly down to my gorilla thumbs.
5 clicks turns the Innokin Jem Pen on, another 5 will turn it off.
The Coils
First off, when you take the Jem Pen out of the box, a coil does not come pre-fitted, make sure and put a coil in before filling the tank!
More on how to do that below.
The coils themselves are small, now you may have got advice before about priming the coils before fitting.
They are that small that if you prime them you will end up flooding the coil and juice will leak from the air hole and you will be spending a bit of time wiping the Jem Pen with a tissue.
How Does The Innokin Jem Pen Perform?
First, let’s take a quick look at how to fill and install/change the coils.
How To Change The Innokin Jem Pen Coil
Inserting the coil couldn’t be simpler:
- Simply unscrew the tank from the main body of the Jem Pen
- Screw a coil into the top of the main body.
If you are changing the coil and you have juice in the tank, don’t panic, just hold it upside down and unscrew the tank, the juice will not leak out of the drip tip.
How to fill the Innokin Jem Pen
It is very simple:
- Unscrew the Drip Tip (mouthpiece) from the tank
- Fill through the two side holes on top of the tank
- Do not fill juice into the central hole and this goes directly to the coil and will cause flooding and leaking.
- Screw the drip tip back into place and leave to stand for 5 minutes before vaping to allow the e-liquid to soak through to the coil.
Flavour and Vapour Production
Flavour from both coils is pretty spot on.
However, I did prefer the 1.6 ohm Kanthal coil over the ceramic 2.0 ohm.
The Kanthal coil handles up to a 70VG/30PG mix of juice with ease, zero dry hits even when chain vaping.
The 2.0 ohm ceramic struggled a bit with the 70VG/30PG mix but worked fine up to a 60VG/40PG mix. A 50PG/50VG juice also works perfectly with both coils and no sign of leaking.
I used a variety of juices with both coils, Pure Mist B&L 50/50, Vampire Vape Pinkman 60/40 and Excision Harambe 70/30. I also thoroughly enjoyed using Daily Vapour (Titanic Vapour) nic salt juice with the 1.6 ohm coil, this was a 50/50 mix.
Flavour from the Jem Pen is great and comparable, if not better, to most of the rebuildable MTL tanks that I use regularly. Bold statement I know!
Coil Life
Two weeks on, I am still regularly using the Jem Pen, it has become my method of getting my Nic Salt vape with the 1.6 ohm Kanthal coils.
This coil is still going strong after a week and a half. Looking at the coil now there could be about a months worth of regular use out of it before I need to change. It still looks clean and like it has only been used for a couple of days.
It’s worth noting that I’m not using overly sweet juice which will have an impact on the colouring and clogging of the coil.
Airflow | Draw
The draw of the Innokin Jem Pen is very similar to a medium strength cig. Being an ex smoker of Marlboro reds, I would say that the draw is not as restrictive as those, but definitely more restrictive than a Marlboro light.
Juice Consumption
The wife and I went out on a road trip along the North Coast of Northern Ireland. Whilst driving and chain vaping on the Jem Pen for over 6 hours, I only had to refill twice, making this an extremely economical vape.
Vapour Production
This is a MTL device, so vapour production is not huge and not supposed to be but it’s comparable to other MTL device/Tanks.
Battery Life
The 1000 mAh battery under a full charge should last you a full day, constant chain vaping will give you around 6 hours of use.
Charging the battery couldn’t be simpler, plug in the Micro USB cable and walk away, you will not be able to use this device while it is charging. To get the battery fully charged will only take a couple of hours.
Pros
- Good Build Quality
- Excellent Flavour
- Easy to use
- Fits in any pocket
- Good Battery Life
Cons
- Drip tip could prove difficult to open
Final Review Verdict
I vape both MTL and direct to lung (DTL) but when sitting at home or driving the car I enjoy a nice MTL vape.
I have thoroughly enjoyed using the Innokin Jem Pen and will continue to carry it around when out and about.
Although aimed and beginners/new vapers, even a hardcore vaper will find this MTL device quite enjoyable and simple to use. The only issue I have is with the drip tip, as I mentioned, it can be quite difficult to unscrew, just try not to over tighten it, when you start to feel resistance stop tightening it!
Did you buy the Innokin Jem Pen? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
Early days ( a week) but up to know I really like it. Nice size and so easy to use . It’s definitely a 👍 from me .
Had to send it back bc of constant gurgling and juice in my mouth. Really liked it when it worked. According to innokin they are looking into this common problem. It would be good for about 2 hours then do nothing but sputter. Really disappointed. I ordered another one from a different vendor in the hopes that I won’t have this problem. Any suggestions?
I have been vaping and now when I click the button 5 times.. It blinks red and it just turns off.. I click I again and it clicks green and then turns off.. When I plug it in to charge the lights go out..I don’t know what to do
I bought the jem pen on Boxing Day first couple of days ok then after vaping for a short time it started to burn my throat left it for while then started to vape once more
After a few vapes burnt my throat changed coil ok then started getting burnt sensation again been back to VZ 6 times no joy also oilseeping out off air hole also oil in the charging point of
This little thing……… This was my first vape pen. I absolutely LOVE the pull and the hit you get on this thing. But it ALWAYS ends up leaking and spitting and bubbling on me! I’m EXHAUSTED WITH IT. I replace coils, clean well, make sure its back together correctly and the most its ever done well for me is maybe a day. If I try to refill or change juices, it leaks EVERYTIME and I have to start over. I give up. I ended up with a AIO Joytech. I dont like the way it pulls compared to the Jem Pen, its way too loose. But its top airflow prevents leaking ever. And the coil in it has lasted almost 2 weeks so far. I prefer the Jem Pen when it works but I have wasted so much juice and bought so many coils Im just done with it.
Hello i need help i just got the vape and its not working i think i did everythinh right
Hi Manuel,
What exactly is happening? is it powering on? Are the LEDs appearing on the button? Have you charged it?
Quite a few more possible questions, can you give me a bit more info?
Thanks
Ken
I bought this pen. This is my first vape pen. I followed the instructions on how to set it up: put in the coil, put in the liquid, and charge. However after leaving it stood up charging I’ve come back to it and found all the liquid has leaked out. How? What did I do wrong?
Hi Chris, sorry to hear that, coming back to any device and finding a pool of juice can be one of the most annoying things ever!
Can I ask, was the coil screwed into the device tightly? Did you feel any resistance when you started screwing it in? It could be possible that the coil didn’t thread properly into the pen, sometimes it is useful to do a few reverse turns to make sure the threads grip.
Great video mate, i ve already watched many reviews on Youtube and i am pretty sure that is a great device for mtl users like me. Just a question please, how long does it take for a full charge when is almost dead of battery and if u can wash up the drip tip and the tank without the coil of course if u wanna change a liquid flavour. Thanx in advance, great job.
Thankyou very much for that 🙂
I am getting a full charge from dead in about 2 hours.
Been using it for the last 3 days and I really love this elegant MTL buddy. An affordable device with such a great performance. Zero dry hits, restricted the way I prefer and gives a lovely flavor. My only complaint is that you can’t replace the drip tip.
Great review! Very informative and to the point, will definitely consider purchasing this.
