Innokin have steadily been releasing a new range of products over the last few months such as the excellent Disrupter mod and the iSub tank range, the latter of which has a new addition. That new addition is of course the iSub Apex tank.
Can it make an impact in a crowded marketplace? Lets check it out.
This tank was received free of charge for the purposes of this review. As always views are my own.

Design and Build Quality
First impressions of the tank are good. I’m personally a fan of clean lines and designs and the Apex definitely fits into that mould.
The tank is split into four sections that surround the 3ml capacity pyrex tank and has a good quality feel in the hand.
Starting from the top we have the top filling section, then the airflow, the main body windows and the removable base.
The tank as a unit cannot be dissembled apart from the base which conceals the coil and of course the 510 drip tip. This could be a concern for a few vapers out there as any breakage to the pyrex tank will require you to completely replace the unit.
Good news is Innokin have protected the pyrex tank with an outer P.C shell.
Personally I’ve never broken a pyrex tank and looking at the stainless steel jacket and the P.C layer the pyrex has surrounding it it’s not too much of a worry for me. I’m going to refrain testing the durability because I’m quite enjoying the tank!
The internals of the Apex tank have what Innokin calls their Prism system which is best left for Innokin to describe:
Innokin’s advanced new design, Prism Flavor+, boosts flavors to bring out the best in your favorite eliquids.
The patented Prism convection airflow system draws in air through the dual, raised, adjustable intakes, down into the heated outer chamber and then back up through the vaporizer coils, delivering maximum flavor and also minimizing leakage.
The interior design of the iSub-Apex Prism system further focuses and enhances your eliquid vapor, delivering an exceptional burst of flavor with every vape.
Well it sounds impressive, as for taking a closer look at the internals that’s difficult due to being restricted to what can be seen through the windows. But, if it performs as well as it reads who cares about the insides!
We will come back to the performance in the next section.
Functions
Let break down the various workings of the tank.
Coil Replacement
The base is the same as the iSub G tank in that the base plate unscrews so the coils can be slotted into the tank.
As with the previous iSub tanks I love this feature, it really is one of the most straightforward mess free ways for changing coils in any tank out there.
It’s a simple case of turning the tank upside down, pulling the coil out and slotting a new one in. This can be done with a full tank of e liquid. Simple.
Top Fill System
The ease of use goes one step further with the Apex tank when it comes to filling with juice. The top section of the tank is the ‘Solid Spin Top Fill System’.
Now I have used other brands of tank that are top fill such as the Smok TFV4 but I have to say the simplicity and execution of the Apex top fill beats that particular tank hands down.
A simple twist of the top part of the tank reveals two filling holes, glass drippers and standard 10ml plastic juice bottles fit no problem and allow for filling of the tank in a few seconds.
Simply turn again and the holes are covered by two layers of steel. There are small graphics on the top directing you which way to turn the tank but these aren’t really needed, it’s all very simple to use.
I have had this in my pocket, the right way up, on it’s side, upside down and I experienced no leaking at all. Great stuff. A seemingly simple feature that worked perfectly for me.
Airflow
The airflow ring has the same sized holes as the other iSub tanks but it sits higher on the Apex and differs to the others in that it sits over the pyrex glass.
The two holes that can be opened up to around an inch each. The ring is smooth to turn and can be rotated in any direction a full 360. Again, no issues here at all, easy to use and offers massive amounts of vapor when fully opened for those big direct to lung hits.
The latest Apex models now don’t have the airflow control on the drip tip (as seen on these pics). It doesn’t, for me, make any difference to the performance. This new design can be seen on the Apex 5ml tank.
How To Clean the iSub Apex
As mentioned the iSub Apex cannot be totally disassembled but it is easy to clean though. Remove the bottom and the drip tip and run water through. Then you can either blow air through or use a hairdryer to speed up the drying process.
Let it sit for a while then repeat to clean.
The inner Pyrex glass tank is not removable and is protected by the outer P.C. shell.
Condensation
When vaping on the Innokin iSub Apex you may notice a slight moisture build up on the inside of the protective windows of the iSub Apex; this is only condensation and it is very easy to clean. When the iSub coils are heated then the interior of the tank and the surrounding internal temperature is raised higher than the outside temperature.
The raised air-flow brings air in and down through the Prism Flavor+ system and moisture may collect on the inside of the outer protective shell.
If this happens it is not e-liquid leaking, it is condensation; your e-liquid continues to be securely contained inside the interior Pyrex tank.
This condensation is similar to what you have may have experienced in a car while driving when moisture condenses on the inside of the windows.
It is easy to clean the condensation from the iSub Apex.
- Vape until the tank is almost empty or drain the remaining e-liquid then remove the bottom cap and pull out the iSub Coil.
- Turn the top cap to open the filling holes being careful not to get any e liquid onto your hands as some my drain out. If you do be sure to wash your hands immediately.
- Run clean water through the tank and wash thoroughly.
- Shake the remaining water from the tank and place it with the bottom side down onto some tissue or a towel. shake again to remove any remaining moisture. You can speed up the drying process with a hairdryer on cool.
- Allow to air dry and then replace the iSub coil and the bottom cap. Make sure it’s sealed well but not over tightened.
How Does the Innokin iSub Apex Tank perform?
In short the Innokin Apex performs brilliantly. Whatever the new patented Prism System is, it works.
I started at 20W on the Innokin disrupter with the 0.5 ohm coil which was a good vape if a little cool but for me the flavors really started to punch in the 25-27 watt zone.
I tested a few e juices. Once in a Blue Moon by Kind Juice and a couple of Beard Vape eliquids – and found the flavor spot on for my tastes.
Firing up upto 38 watts produced a gradually warmer vape with the flavor starting to tail off the higher I got and deteriorating at 40W. Which is no surprise really as the coils are at their best between 20-35W.
Dry hits? – I didn’t experience any so all good on that front.
If you are new to sub ohm vaping then please be sure you have the correct batteries and device. Check here for more info on batteries for sub ohm vaping and here for suitable box mods.
Is the Apex Tank Worth It?
I haven’t put this tank down and can’t see myself doing so for a good while. The performance, quite simply (after 2 days of chain vaping) has been superb. Flavor great, massive clouds with the airflow fully open and zero leaking issues for me.
The ease of use is a huge draw for me as well.
Some vapers may find the 3ml capacity limiting but this tank is so quick and easy to refill I can’t see this being too much of an issue.
Final Review Verdict
I found the Innokin iSub Apex tank to be a top performer with build quality to match. This would be a great bit of kit for those new to sub ohm vaping due to how easy it is to use.
While not an issue for me personally the fact that the tank cannot be broken down into replaceable parts may be an issue for some.
Other than that it’s difficult to find any real negatives. I think I’ve found my a new favorite sub ohm tank, or at least at the time of writing 🙂

I’ve acquired the Cool Fire iv plus with the iSub apex tank from my husband, he stopped vaping almost 4 years ago and the kit has been sat on the shelf since then. It came with 2 x 0.5 coils and I’m currently using the second one so need to get some more. I’d like to get 1.0 ohm but the coil range of the apex is 20 – 35 watts. Can you tell me if the 1.0 ohm would work or is the wattage range too small, should I get the 0.5 ohm coils instead? Thanks.
Hi Viv,
The recommended wattage ratings on the coils are a guideline. What I tend to do when trying a new coil is start the wattage low and work my way up until I find the right level for me. It may fall in the wattage range recommended but if not then no problem.
So, not 100% sure on the question but all the Apex coils will work with the Apex tank and the Cool Fire IV Plus.
Hopefully that helps but if not let me know 🙂
Great tank, but a mission to see how much liquid you have left. Especially if you get condensation. I would recommend this tank if not for those 2 issues. I have found that if you have a colored Liquid it makes life a lot easier but then you have to look for liquids with a nice taste and a distinct color (Just so you can see the juice in the tank)
Yeah I agree Daddy. But for me it just made me top up a little more regularly and I was using darker juices most of the time. The Apex 5ml version is a lot better for juice visibility though.
Great tank! Great flavour! Thanks for the review. It swayed me to buy it.
For anyone experiencing flooding there’s no need to put liquid inside any coil imo. Just leave it for half hour in a full tank. Job done!
Nice one Paul! Glad you’re liking it. Such an easy tank to use as well.
I agree, I’ve never been one for ‘painting the wicks’ before I put my coil in. Just 5/10 mins soaking time does the trick!
I’ve just received my Apex tank (I may be a bit thick) but I can’t see any fill to level line. I don’t want to over fill as with other tanks you end up with juice in the mouth.
Hi Don,
I haven’t got mine in front of me but I don’t think there is an actual fill level line. I usually just fill to the top of the visible window.
Let me know how you get on!
Cheers
Jonny
Hi Jonny,
I’m relatively new to vaping and looking to move up to the Innokin Cool Fire 4 Plus from the Endura T22. I’ll be vaping mouth to lung, will this tank with the 2ohm coils be suitable for this mod? The starter kits are shipped with this tank or the iSub G, which one would be best for mouth to lung?
Thanks
Hey Trevor
The Endura tank and 2.0 ohm coils can be used with the Cool Fire 4+ mod for sure. You just need to use it at the lower end of the wattage scale.
The mod may be overkill for your tank in terms of the power output it supplies but if you are simply looking to get extended battery life then it will certainly offer you that.
The iSub G tank is a direct lung inhale tank and won’t be a good option for MTL vaping.
Any other questions on this let me know.
Cheers
Jonny
Can i use aspire atlantis 2 coils in the i sub prism tank. TIA
Hi Claire,
They aren’t compatible unfortunately, only the iSub coils will work with the iSub tank.
Cheers
Jonny
A really solid entry from Innokin – it could be a bit bigger capacity-wise and the fact that it can’t be quick-dried with a towel is a bit of a pain but it’s actual functionality is pretty stellar.
I have been using Isub A tank with VG 60 / PG 40. I have cool fire IV Plus. I use at 20.00W and I am a very frequent user. My coil 0.5 burns even before I finish my first tank. Any suggestion? Last time I have primed my coil with some juice, which I have put it directly on both sides of wick and some juice at the centre of coil. Than i put everything back and had some dry puffs or whatever you call it and still the same result, wick is completely black and not even half of the tank is used. Thanks.
Hi Muhammad,
Thanks for stopping by.
Just a few questions to try and see what it could be!
So after installing a new coil, priming as you described above and filling your tank are you leaving things to sit for 5 minutes before use so the coil has time to soak up the e liquid?
Have you made sure that the top fill holes have been closed when vaping?
Has this happened with different coils or just the one?
Also, if you burn the coil by accident at any stage this will need replacing and cannot be recovered, I have done this before when accidentally pressing the fire button before juice has had a chance to soak into the coil properly!
Last but most likely. You mentioned you are a very frequent vaper. You may be vaping quicker than the coil is having a chance to soak up the juice between draws. If you draw a number of times in a row you need to give the e liquid a chance to soak back into the coil wick.
If this is the case just slow down a little or maybe consider upping your nicotine % a touch to satisfy your cravings and reduce the number of drags you need to take.
Let me know on the above Muhammad if anything makes sense or may apply to you.
Cheers
Jonny
Hi there, I have been using one of these for a while and they are very good, totally get the lack of visibility is a pain, one of the reasons I stick to darker liquids.Over the last couple of days I’ve been getting mouthfuls of liquid, it looks like the liquid is coming out of the bottom near the coil. My guess is that there is a seal somewhere in the bottom that may have gone or lost, there was a bag of seals in the box, but has anyone any idea where it goes.
Hi Simon,
First off. Have you tried new coil heads? Leaking like you mention can be caused by the coil no longer wicking correctly. This allows juice to simply flow out of the tank via the coil.
There is a seal inside the tube where you insert the coil. If there is a seal there it is unlikely to be that seal that is the issue. Can you see that seal?
I have also had this problem, and I though it was the wick so I changed to the new coil and it was fine but after about 2 hours i started to eliquid in my mouth again, I only have it at 22w so im not really to sure what the problem is
Hi, Unfortunately I had the same problem. Have changed coils 3 times. Works fine for a day and then it starts gurgling and the liquid starts pouring out. Some research on the net says the tank maybe bent so tap it so it goes back in place. No luck for me. I loved this tank but now I am going to have to replace it.
Hi, does it take the same coil as the normal isub
Sorry I’m new to this and I need new coils.
Hi Clare,
No need to apologise, it is pretty confusing sometimes making sure everything is compatible!
Yes the iSub and Apex tanks all use the same coil heads.
Thanks
Jonny
Really seems like a good tank I have the Isub an it serves me well really like the coil system they made
Good review
I’ve had an isub g tank for about 3 months and found vaping a new dimension from my previous model until I started getting leaks which my local supplier fixed by replacing the two seals for me free of charge. Then when I saw the Apex I thought wow what an improvement, but to be honest although it is easy to fill and has the drip compartment and looks great I have to say after one weeks use I’m not completely sold on it. It has to be filled more often and if your juice is not dark I find it difficult to keep an eye on what’s left in the tank, as a consequence I have had the god awful dry vape taste twice this week (disgusting). This was definitely not a problem with my isub g which I have put back on for a couple of days.
I will persevere though.
I hear what you are saying with the difficulty in seeing juice levels and a dry hit is horrible. I find holding the tank up to the light and tilting to the side helps determine if a top up is needed. I have also gotten into the habit of topping up more frequently.
I really like the iSub G as well but find myself using the Apex more simply for the ease of refilling, especially if I’m out and about.
Hope it gets better for you though Stan, let me know how you get on!
Is this compatible with the Smok Magneto 3?
Hi Luis,
Yes the Apex Tank will work with the Magento 3 but as this is an unregulated device (the Magneto) be sure you have a read up on the necessary safety precautions and do some research on the batteries you will need. This is especially the case if you are going to be using the lower resistance coils (sub ohm vaping).
So that was fun. My iSub Apex arrived this morning. Filled it, left it to settle for about 40 minutes then went for it and bam! A mouthful of juice! All reviews I’ve seen suggest it is a good tank so I guess I did something wrong. Any idea what?
FYI… Juice tastes fucking disgusting in liquid form!
A mouthful of juice is for sure a horrible thing Phil, although I haven’t had it happen to me in a couple of years!
I’m using the Apex as I write this and have been for 5/6 weeks and the only kind of leaking I had was when I left the top fill holes open and tilted the tank – Not good either!
What process did you go through when you filled the tank?
Normally getting juice like this is due to liquid getting in the airflow tube somehow (stating the obvious there).
Suggestions:
– Your draw maybe too hard – Longer and slower draws may help – The harder the draw more e-liquid will feed through the coil/wick quicker and possibly flood.
– The juice isn’t being heated enough as it’s passing over the coil to fully vaporize before reaching your mouth.
– Maybe too much juice was dripped directly on the coil prior to placing in the tank.
– Try opening up your airflows
– Try a few dry burns (1-2 of seconds each) to burn off a bit of excess juice
– Try a fresh coil. Let it sit for 5/10 mins before vaping
Let me know how you get on, sorry if the above sounds obvious. It’s a difficult one without seeing it. I’m sure there is a reason why it’s happening though!
How much is this going to be going for?
Looks to be around £28/29 Ed.
Cheers Jonny
