Innokin iSub Apex 5ml Tank Review

The Innokin ISUB Apex 5 is the extended capacity version of the iSUB Apex tank, a recent release from Innokin that received high praise indeed, mainly down to the excellent flavor produced by the tank.

Innokin are known for providing user friendly and great performing products, that have a wide appeal to all. Just take a look at the recent Endura T18 and T22 reviews for a couple of examples.

What Can We Expect From The 5ml iSub Apex Tank By Innokin

The Apex 5 doesn’t just boast an extended capacity however, also bundled with the tank are Innokin’s exciting new Clapton coils, which promise to offer even better flavour than the original coil heads.

Build Quality and Looks

The ISUB Apex5 is available in Innokin’s new and striking Black Edition which is a really nice finish. They also have a stainless steel version as well.

Size wise, the extra capacity (which now stands at 5ml) means the tank is taller rather than wider – the width remains at 22mm – so it’s a pretty tall tank which may be off putting to some!

The extra height does mean a bigger window on the tank which makes it a lot easier to gauge how much e liquid is remaining.

Apart from that, it’s nigh on identical in terms of looks to the previous Apex tank, with the exception being the extra height and the black finish, if of course you opt for the Black Edition.

At the top of the tank a removable wide bore drip tip is present alongside the patent top filling system, which is really simple to use, you simply rotate the top cap to expose the two fill holes. A click indicates when it’s fully open or closed.

The fill holes are large and accommodating, and you’ll have no trouble filling quickly on the move and when I say on the move I have filled this literally on the move when walking down the street.

One of the best top fill systems for me to date.

At the side of the tank you will see the adjustable airflow slot, and the tank viewing window which is made of a Pyrex inner and poly-carbonate outer.

The original suffered from condensation build up, whereby condensation would gather between the Pyrex and poly-carbonate outer making it hard to see how much juice is left in the tank, unfortunately the same issue is present here, however it isn’t quite as bad this time around.

If you do get a condensation build up (it isn’t a juice leak) it’s easy to rectify.

• Empty the tank (either vape the remainder or drain)
• Remove the base cap and pull out the iSub Coil.
• Fully open the top fill holes.
• Run clean water through the tank and wash thoroughly.
• Shake remaining water from the tank
• Put tissue or paper towel on the bottom of the tank and shake again to remove as much remaining water as possible.
• If you can use a hairdresser on a cool setting to speed things along a little.
• If not just allow to air dry
• Replace iSub coil and the bottom cap.

Coil Swap System

Innokin’s excellent no spill coil swap system has been retained for this tank, and it’s an excellent feature pretty much every clearomiser out there should have!

The coils themselves are 510 threaded, so when you need to change a coil you simply unscrew the base of the tank, slide the old one out and replace it with a fresh coil.

It’s quick and easy, mess free and a great system to have in place. No unscrewing or emptying tanks needed.

How Does The Innokin Apex 5 Tank Perform

The ISUB Apex 5 comes with Innokin’s superb new BVC Clapton Coil heads which have a resistance of 0.5ohm and are rated for use at an incredible 30-70w.

For this review I used Ghetto Penguin E-Liquid by Riot Squad which is a 70VG mix.

These really do kick out the clouds when you crank up the power, and the flavor is superb.

I’ve found for flavor that these coils seem to perform best at 50w, if clouds are what you are looking for then you won’t be disappointed at 60-70w.

The vape does get quite warm above 55w so if you prefer a cooler vape, you might want to stick under this.

Lifespan of the coils is really good too, with them lasting around 2 weeks on average.

Airflow is controlled via the airflow control located at the top of the tank, above the juice viewing window.

Rotating the top cap will open or close down the airflow, and the airflow works in conjunction with Innokin’s PRISM flavor boost system, which draws air in and around the coils to boost flavor. Here’s Innokin’s official explanation about how this all works-

All in all the build quality of the iSUB Apex5 tank is great, it sports really nice clean lines just like the original Apex tank, and it looks great with Innokin’s Cool Fire 4 Plus mod for example!

Final Innokin iSub Apex 5 Tank Review

The original Apex tank offered some of the best flavour from a sub ohm tank yet and the Apex 5 boasts even better flavor with the included Clapton coils while allowing you to enjoy it for longer with the capacity bump to 5ml.

Build quality is rock solid, however the height of the tank and the fact it can’t be broken down fully to clean may be off putting for some. That being said, those are only very minor negatives and all in all this is an excellent tank from Innokin.

The flavour you get from this tank is really outstanding and it’s very user friendly, as well as being relatively cheap, so it’s a tank that is also going to have great appeal to beginners to sub ohm vaping.

The no spill coil swap system is a great invention from Innokin and I’m really pleased to see it present here too, you have the ability to swap coils quickly and without any mess or fuss.
