Vaping giant, iJoy, out of Shenzhen, is hellbent on innovating and, somehow, they just keep hitting the money and it looks as though that could be the case again with the iJoy Captain PD270 mod.iJoy Captain PD270 review

Having released the first dual 26650 mod, a result of their partnership with Limitless: the iJoy Limitless Lux, along with a string of impressive RDAs out of the same partnership.

More recently the iJoy Shogun JR kit…we’ve continued to be impressed.

The iJoy Captain PD270 Mod

Now, once again, iJoy have pushed the envelope, with the release of the Captain PD270 regulated vape mod.

A device that runs on dual 20700’s:  a whole new breed of battery being introduced to the vaping world by iJoy.

Given the fact that we may have reached the limits as far as low ohm-age on our sub-ohm devices goes, the two areas that could, of course, still use tweaking are those of batteries and chip-sets.

The Captain PD270 proudly boasts winners in both departments. With impressive power, extreme ramp time, super responsiveness and seriously enhanced battery life, iJoy are set to make waves! Can this make our Best Vape Mod list?

Build Quality & Design

The sturdy zinc alloy and carbon fiber frame of the iJoy Captain PD270, combined with the hefty weight of the fabulous dual 20700 batteries, amount to what I can only describe as a lethal weapon…if you threw it at anybody, that would be the end of them. It’s heavy.ijoy Captain PD270 mod and tank

On opening the neat box packaging, I was struck by the sexy frame and perfect, huge, square firing button.

The deep and solid 510 connection sits on an upper surface that is more than ample enough to fit a 30mm tank without any sign of overhang.

The design is a very simple rectangular cylinder with rounded corners, just big enough to house the hefty 20700’s inside.

The hinged battery door is thick and the hinges feel strong. The battery chamber is snug and the whole device feels compact, with no rattles whatsoever.

That’s not to say it’s not ergonomic, it fits perfectly in hand and plants your feet firmly on the ground with its weight.

I really do love the weight of it, when it’s in your hand, you know it’s there!

The stupendous, clicky firing button couldn’t be better placed and the screen display fits in all the details you could ask for.

Accessories

I was delighted to discover that the dual 20700 batteries were generously included in the pack, not to mention the nifty, silicon 18650 adapter that will allow you to use the device with your old 18650s…not that you’ll necessarily want to.

How Does The Captain PD270 Box Mod Perform?

The IWEPAL chip is highly responsive and does its TC and regulating perfectly.

The device adjusts to and reads new atomizers accurately and instantly and I find the display and controls highly intuitive and comprehensive.

Puff counter, mode, battery levels, wattage, resistance and volts are all displayed and three clicks on fire will take you to the settings menu where you can into into TCR and mode settings, adjust screen time and reset your puffs.

The responsive up and down navigation buttons can also be used to alter the wattage when on the main the display.

I experienced an extremely fast ramp time and an all round brilliant vape throughout the wattage range and I love the fact that I can fit ANY of my tanks on it with no overhang!

It operates like a dream in the really high wattage range and the mode system, with user, soft, hard and normal settings is an easy and effective way to customize your vape for different moods.

I just want to add that I really love the fire button, its solid, reassuring and perfectly thumb sized!

How To Operate the Menu System

  • 5 clicks on fire switches the device on or off
  • Use the up down adjustment buttons below the screen to alter wattage or navigate the menu
  • Reach the menu with 3 clicks on fire
  • Some menus require you to use the fire button to navigate because you use the adjustment buttons to change figures, such as the TCR menu

How To Replace The 20700 Batteries

  • Open the hinged battery door by sliding it forward first and then opening
  • You’ll see small +- signs on the door, so you know which way to slide your batteries in

Battery Life

Well, there’s just no denying it, these batteries make all the difference.

I’m a heavy, high wattage vaper and it’s a pleasure to not have to charge every 6-8 hours.

Picture yourself vaping happily at 90 watts for a day and a half before really needing a charge.

The 20700’s are in between 18650’s and 26650’s, without the awkward thickness of the 26650’s.

I don’t have a lot of experience with 26650 devices but for me, dual 20700’s are all I can ask for and really take care of the nagging battery life issues I usually deal with every day, as a heavy vaper.

Also, the batteries fit in the standard Nitecore external chargers so you won’t have to worry about buying a special charger.

I found the on-board charge extremely fast.

What I Liked

I love the look and feel, the heavy weight and the carbon fiber finish.

Great, comprehensive screen display with easy controls.

Awesome that dual 20700’s are included (in the kit I received) thanks iJoy!

Excellent battery life. Marvelous, clicky buttons and super responsive.

A really powerful, satisfying vape.

What I Dislike

I can’t fault the device, as far as look, feel, functionality and power goes, it’s an absolute beast of a box mod!

Pros

  • Dual 20700’s provide ample power with a seriously extended battery life
  • Awesome, ergonomic but heavy weight design
  • Fantastic fire button
  • Highly responsive chip
  • Intuitive menu, very easy to navigate
  • Large enough for any tank up to 30mm
  • Outstanding, high wattage vape

Cons

  • None

Final Review Verdict

Well, not only have iJoy been extremely generous by including dual 20700’s with the Captain PD270…they’ve succeeded in creating yet another badass, high powered vape mod that looks, feels and vapes like a dream.

Maybe iJoy are right and 20700’s are the way of the future, they certainly make a big difference to me and now I wish all my devices used them.

This is a top notch device at a brilliant price.

And..

Would I buy the iJoy Captain PD270 mod if I lost/broke the device?

Well, of course I would!

When I finally got back on the vaping train I decided to make it my business to educate beginners and vapers in general, so that they don’t jump to the conclusions that I did. ijoy-captain-pd270-mod-reviewedApart from the scratches that appeared far too easily on the screen cover the iJoy Captain is a fantastic device.

  1. It appears that 21700 might flood the market soon if the Tesla Gigafactories outstrip 20700 production. Can the pd720 handle the extra 1mm diameter?

    • Martin! My short answer would be: NO!!!!!! I’m no battery expert but it’s better to stay within the listed parameters at all times, where batteries are concerned!

  2. Having dropped my Smokes Gpriv and broke it, I went for the Ijoy PD270 and am so far delighted. Now I’m not into a multitude of different settings, I just select wattage mode and fire it up using my trusty TFV8 big baby.
I’ve seen reports that the battery time between charges is no better than the 18650’s. I have to disagree. I’m getting a far longer life from the 20700’s. I just love the feel of it in my hand, and the fire button is the best I’ve tried yet.
The only thing I can fault it on is that I wished the screen was a little bigger, but being used to the Gpriv, I’m gonna say that I suppose.
Only had it a week, but so far, I’m well pleased.

    • Hi, Martin! I’m sorry to hear about your GPriv but if it was the reason you bought your Captain PD270 then maybe it’s not such hard luck after all. This is probably my favorite mod at the moment. I also just love the feel of the Carbon Fibre and that huge button. I have to disagree with rumors about battery life, it’s a definite improvement for me and battery specs are enough to make you wonder what those folks are on about. I’d have to say…you’ll get used to the screen, I think the Gpriv gave you very high standards, screen wise, haha. I highly recommend you check out an RDTA from iJoy to get the most out of your mod. I’ve got the iJoy Combo 2 on my Captain right now and it’s SUCH a winning combo…excuse the pun! https://www.ecigclick.co.uk/ijoy-combo-rdta-2-reviewed/

  3. Hi, Sippo! You’re quite right, there are no venting holes but to date I’ve not experienced any overheating or excessive heating with the device, even when subbing above 200W, which I tend to do often. I find the iJoy 20700s to be very high quality batteries so far and I think that as long as you stay within the stipulated range for the mod, you should be okay. Other than that, I suppose I can’t really tell you why they chose to omit this detail. Just be safe and try not to over work your gear!

  4. I got my iJoy Captain 3 days ago, i am very pleased with its performance and easy to use functions. Ive paired it with the Aspire Cleito EXO sub ohm tank and what ever wattage i choose the Captain never faults, and a few of my RDAs .Im very pleased with the looks and the feel of this box mod

  5. I love my Ijoy Captain, it is a bit bigger than my other twin battery mods but too much. The temp control with SS316l works well, though you have to use up and down to lock the resistance accurately. I heard it was underpowered but I have not found that to be the case.
I have found it pairs well with the Ijoy 5 and looks good too, All of my attys and tanks fit and sit nicely on top of the Captain.
The battery life is really good and for me it has pushed the Asmodus Minikin 2 to the shelf
I hope the use of 20700 batteries is the sign of the future, vaping has to survive it is leading its own technology and saving lives, The Ijoy Captain has a great future

    • Absolutely, It’s my current go-to and looks, ergonomics, combined with the extended battery life from the 20700s are all winners for me. Glad to hear it’s been pleasing you on the TC front as well. I’m currently using it with the Cigpet ECO 12 and dang, do they look good together!
