Ahoy there and it’s all aboard for the review of the new iJoy Captain 1500 vape kit!
iJoy has predominantly used the Captain name on its larger, dual battery devices for which there have been plenty of variants.
Good timing too, as I’ve only just reviewed the iJoy Captain 2 kit for the #ecigclickfam.
Overall the iJoy Captain 2 kit was very good, a solid device which came with the Captain V Sub-Ohm Tank which performed very well.
The word ‘Captain’ is usually given to the leader of a sports team or is the person in command of a ship. So when the iJoy Captain 1500 Kit came through the post. I wondered why iJoy would stick such a powerful name on a low power pod mod?
What Can We Expect From the iJoy Captain 1500?
The iJoy Captain 1500 kit comes with a large capacity 5ml pod tank with a bottom-fill function and also bottom fitted coils.
The device itself is powered by a 1500mAh internal battery and can fire up to 40 watts.
There is also a smart little airflow adjustment ring you attach to each coil which means you can make use of the 0.7Ω Coil for a tighter MTL draw, or open it right up for a Direct To Lung vape with the 0.3Ω Mesh coil.
So let’s crack on with the review and see what this kit is all about.
This kit was sent to me free of charge for the purpose of review.

Design and Build Quality
Standing only 99mm tall, the iJoy Captain 1500 is a cute wee system which is made up of a combination of tough feeling plastic and a leather surround on the rear of the device.
The leather section isn’t cushioned quite as well as some other devices, along with their own Captain 2 mod, but with the contrasting stitching on the leather, it looks fairly smart.
The Captain 1500 Pods
The kit comes with just the one pod which houses a Push-Fit Coil.
If you get your hands on the Non-TPD variant, you can squeeze a decent 5ml of e-liquid in the pod, of course the TPD version will be limited to 2ml.
The pod clicks nice and smoothly into the device thanks to 2 small notches on either side.
No magnets are present on the pod, or inside the device but a small notch system, but it works quite well.
The mouthpiece is non removable but is the usual 510 Drip-Tip Style, it’s nothing flash or fancy but straight and functional. Its a little on the tall side but that hasn’t really bothered me.
The pod is also clear, meaning its very easy to see your e-liquid level without having to remove it, or point a torch over it.
Captain 1500 Pod Mod In the Hand
The iJoy Captain 1500 is a really small system considering it houses a 1500mAh battery, a 5ml Pod Tank and 40 watts of power.
I can only really compare it to the Smok RPM40 which in comparison is pretty much shares the same dimensions but feels a lot more lightweight but a little more comfortable thanks to the curved leather back.
I mean, if you’re going to copy a pod mod. The OG Smok RPM40 isn’t a bad idea, but pod mods have moved on a bit since the RPM40 which was one of the game-changers, and one of the first in this category.
Regardless of how you use this device, finger or thumb firing I doubt even the smallest hands will have much trouble.
This is a teeny tiny device which will barely take up any room in your pocket or purse, not to mention its extremely lightweight, so top marks for portability.
However, being so lightweight does make it feel a little cheap, especially when you compare it to the high build quality and strong structure of its bigger brother the Captain 2 Mod.
How To fit the Coils and Fill the Captain 1500 Pod Mod
Here’s how to fill the pod with e-liquid:
- Remove the Pod from the Device
- Press in the Coil ensuring a tight fit and screw on the Airflow
- Open the small silicone gasket on the front side of the pod
- Fill with your desired e-liquid and re-fit the gasket
- Leave the e-liquid to soak the coil for 5 minutes
- Re-fit the Pod to the device and enjoy.
Captain 1500 Pod Mod Display Functions
One nice feature with the iJoy Captain 1500 kit, which is slowly becoming the norm, is the smart functions from the device which means regardless of which coil you install, the device will automatically set the wattage to the recommended amount – which makes life a little easier for new vapers.
Understanding wattage and airflow when you first start vaping appears to be a lot harder to understand than I thought.
However, being a sparky, I kind of figured it out from the start.
But I hear a lot of people having trouble with setting the wattage at a maximum, and the airflow at a minimum on a 1.2 Ohm coil and then wondering why their vape tastes like Death. So a dummy proof Chip-Set is a godsend.
The 0.96in TFT colour display on the Captain 1500 is clear and fairly large considering the size of the device, but perhaps a little dim, especially when outside. But generally I haven’t had a problem with the screen and changing settings.
The settings on this device couldn’t be simpler. The iJoy Captain 1500 is a wattage only device with only a few options which can be altered by using a combination of button sequences using the fire, up and down buttons.
iJoy Captain 1500 Quick Start Guide
Here’s how to operate the iJoy Captain 1500 Device:
- Device On/Off – 5 Clicks of Fire Button
- Lock/Unlock Device – Press & Hold Fire and PLUS Button
- Puff Reset – Press & Hold Fire and MINUS Button.
How Does the iJoy Captain 1500 Pod Mod Perform?
The iJoy Captain 1500 Kit comes with 2 coils.
The C15 0.3Ω Mesh coil is clearly designed for a Direct-Lung draw so for that coil I used my favourite Code Red by Darkstar which is a 80VG/20PG e-liquid and possibly too thick for these small coils…we shall see!
And for the 0.7Ω C15D coil I went for a 50VG/50PG Just Juice – Blood Orange, Citrus and Guava Nic Salt to be used more as a Mouth-To-Lung style.
Captain 1500 Pod Mod – Flavour and Clouds
Seeing as the iJoy Captain 1500 comes with these two contrasting coils as well as the adjustable airflow ring, I had every expectation that the Captain 1500 could deliver a Direct Lung Draw, and a tight Mouth-To-Lung draw depending on which coil is used, wattage setting and airflow setting.
And it can!
Captain 1500 Pod Mod- the 0.3Ω C15 Mesh Coil
Recommended between 30-40 watts, the C15 Mesh coil performed best for me at 35 watts with the airflow ring set to its most open setting.
This coil performs really well for such a small coil and even with the high VG e-liquid, it had no problem keeping up with saturation.
The flavour from this coil is more than acceptable and delivers a slightly warm, saturated vape at 35 watts and a very respectable cloud as well.
Captain 1500 Pod Mod – the 0.7Ω C15D Coil
Recommended between 15 and 25 watts.
I have spent a lot of my time with this coil as a Mouth-To-Lung coil, with the airflow set at basically as closed as possible.
At 18 watts you get a warm vape ,sneaky cloud and fair flavour, not mouth filling but it does a fair job.
However, this coil actually does a decent job as performing as a Direct Lung coil, opening the airflow all the way up and leaving the wattage at 18 watts you can enjoy better flavour and a restrictive Direct Lung Draw.
The restriction is just right as well, yes you have to work a little bit for the vape but its not a strain on your lungs.
A perfect restrictive Direct-Lung draw and a nice amount of vapour.
iJoy Captain 1500 Airflow
Thanks to the airflow ring which attaches to the coils, the iJoy Captain 1500 Kit does offer more diversity and means you can tailor your vape to how you like it.
It works very well and as much as its a little bit of a pain as you have to remove the pod, to adjust the airflow.
Once its set, its really not a big deal.
With regards to noise, turbulence and whistle, the iJoy Captain 1500 kit is n bother whatsoever.
It’s certainly not noisy or turbulent but smooth and offers a nice restriction if you so wish.
iJoy Captain 1500 Battery Life & Charging
Seeing as the iJoy Captain 1500 Kit really can be used as a fairly powerful Direct Lung Pocket rocket and a discreet Mouth-To Lung stealth vape, its only fair to consider that your choice in vaping style will make a huge difference to battery life.
Considering the size of this device, I’m impressed they have squeezed a 1500mAh battery in there and although when vaping at 30-40 watts, you will drain the battery quite quickly, it still lasts a fair while.
When used as a Mouth-To-Lung system with the wattage around 20 watts, the device copes a lot better and has lasted me a full day most of the time.
Located at the base of the device is a USB Type-C port for charging, and although I cannot find anywhere official what the maximum charge time is, I did find one website state 1.5A Max.
Regardless, it’s usually charged within 40-50 minutes. So even if you get caught short whilst out and about, its easy enough to give the device a little boost when needed.
I’m not a fan of USB Ports being located at the base as this means laying the device down for a duration of time which may allow e-liquid to escape easier than if it was standing upright.
Does the iJoy Captain 1500 Pod Mod Leak?
Looking at the fact the iJoy Captain 1500 has bottom-fitted Push-Fit coils along with a filling port near the bottom of the pod, I have not had one leak and barely any condensation inside the top of the device.
If you’re planning on not using the device for more than a few days, I still strongly recommend you remove the pod from the device or make sure there is very little e-liquid within the pod.
Pros
- Decent Pod Capacity (Non TPD)
- Lightweight & Portable
- Average Flavour
- Airflow adjustment makes the device very diverse
- Quick charge and decent capacity
Cons
- Feels cheap in the hand
- Battery diminishes when used at higher wattage
- USB-C Port on the base
Final Review Verdict
As the pod mod battle for domination continues and continues and continues forever, I feel the iJoy Captain 1500 Kit fits somewhere in the middle of the pack.
Its one main feature that makes it stand out, is that it doesn’t stand out!
For such a small device it packs a fair punch and has all the simplicity of use and portability that people who use these kind of devices is looking for.
Would this device be long lasting and still work 3, 6 or even 12 months from now?
I’m not quite sure where to put this device on the durability scale, it really will come down to how much you take care of it.
The device is so small and lightweight that I can well imagine it sat on my lap when I forget to take hold of it when standing and it crashes onto a tiled floor.
I doubt it will take many drops before damage starts to appear.
Also the 1500mAh battery is a fair size, but it will slowly pack in over a few months and isn’t replaceable.
Does this device deliver the flavour, vapour and general experience I require, in order to be enjoyed?
As much as the iJoy Captain 1500 isn’t the best when it comes to flavour and vapour, its definitely not terrible and has certainly been enough for me.
I know this because sometimes when testing products, I also take a device I like with me as well as the product being tested.
But with the iJoy Captain 1500 I never took a second device with me as the Captain 1500 has satisfied me enough day to day…
Its just not the best that’s all…
Is this device versatile to suit a new vaper, and an experienced one a like?
With these kind of devices, I ALWAYS want to see portability, simplicity and durability.
The iJoy Captain 1500 is super portable thanks to its small size and light weight, super simple to use and operate with its clear display and although filling the tank means removing it from the device, its still easy to do.
When it comes to durability I feel its a little on the weak side and I have my concerns long-term, especially if like me, you are a clumsy sod.
However, this kind of system isn’t designed to be thrown around but to be sat on a desk quietly charging and to be nestled in your front pocket when walking the dog.
Have you bought the iJoy Captain 1500 kit?
Or have you given it a try?
