Good flavour is the key ingredient to a great vape and that’s where the new FEELM Taste Evaluation Model comes in.
It’s a case of science meets vaping, and the scientific research team at FEELM really have pulled out all the stops to deliver not only great flavour, but also improvements in strength, note and vapour.
FEELM CEO Frank Han said the team was dedicated to creating the perfect vape experience and to that end are pushing the boundaries on atomization.
FEELM’s parent company – SMOORE, now has a number of global research centres, including in China, where human tasters compare notes with machines.
Human testers – the professional taste evaluation team – go through a ‘palate cleansing‘ ritual before taking the taste test and mark their findings using the FEELM Taste Evaluation Model – a kind of flavour/vapour wheel.
FEELM says the wheel is:
Composed of 4 dimensions, namely flavor, strength, note and vapor, and 51 specific indexes, this model establishes a system to evaluate human senses of mouth, tongue, nose and throat.
Those flavours are then passed through various machines and the final human/machine results are noted.
FEELM says the vape juice will be studied through:
…chromatography, electron microscope as well as reliability labs to analyse its e-liquid ingredients, coil and safety.
The FEELM labs are working in conjunction with a number of esteemed universities on the project including Tongji University, Tsinghua University and Princeton University.
New Tech Disposable Pod Kits
It all sounds great, and it’s hoped the new e-liquid technology will marry perfectly with a new disposable vape device the team is working on.
Various vape companies are lining up to release the device under their own brand names in the near future.
A spokesman for FEELM wanted me to make clear just how innovative this disposable pod will be as it doesn’t have the usual silicone plug:
As you know, FEELM is a high-end technology brand belonging to SMOORE, providing heating technology for closed pod systems.
So the samples are for testing FEELM technology, not for sale.
Soon our clients will launch this product in certain markets.
It’s the FIRST Ceramic Coil disposable pod, and without silicone plug.
The push to the perfect tasting vape came from a client of FEELM’s.
Apparently they asked a simple question about the flavour of California strawberries tasted at 6am…
Yeah, weird…
However the team at FEELM got to thinking – could they replicate that true taste?
And from that question, the FEELM Taste Evaluation Model and labs were born!
FEELM Taste Evaluation Model – How’s the Flavour?
The team did send me 6 testers – not retail versions – so let’s take a very quick look.
I’d like to make it clear that any future retail versions under branded names may have different e-liquids inside.
What I can say is the samples are very basic, extremely lightweight, are draw activated with a tiny internal battery.
The vape is extremely smooth and silent and a tight draw with 10 being the tightest these are around an 8.
OK, and again this is a quick snapshot of the flavours I was sent to try.
- Menthol 10mg: A gentle almost spearmint flavour and just sweet enough.
- Tropical Breeze 0mg: A lovely if a little gentle fruity vape with just a hint of koolada.
- Raspberry 20mg: A really nice rich fruity vape again with a hint of coolant.
- x2 Sweet Lychee 30mg: Despite the really high nic level again a smooth vape spoiled by too much koolada for my palate.
- Tobacco 20mg: A lovely light vape with a very smooth finish.
Whilst these particular flavours didn’t really tickle my taste buds, I can see more popular flavours and brands really popping off the tongue.
FEELM CEO Frank Han summed it all up at the recent company media day:
Taste is a meaningful word
Great taste relies on the scientific system of fundamental research, the persistent improvement of development and manufacturing, the strict quality control, and the worship towards science and ingenuity.
FEELM and SMOORE have certainly been at the forefront of vaping innovation and it’s great to see just how seriously the teams are working to create the perfect vape.
Hopefully when the vape companies release the devices we’ll be able to do a more detailed review.
Vapers Tongue and That ‘Palate Cleansing Ritual’
Incidentally…
So called ‘vapers tongue’ can be very annoying – it’s basically when you lose all sense of taste from your vape.
I wrote about ways to relieve this in the article: Do You Suffer From Any Of These Vaping Side Effects?
So I was intrigued to read how the FEELM taste testers prepare and just what their palate cleansing ritual involved.
FEELM said:
The ritual of tasting is well-designed and solemn.
Before picking up a vaping device, each taster needs to wash and sanitize hands, chew a slice of lemon or yellow peach to clean the palate, drink boiled water to freshen up the mouth and smell coffee beans.
Top tip – let me know if it works for you…
