Introduction: Salt Nic E-Liquid by Apollo
The Apollo Salt Nic E-liquid is a new range from the long established vaping company Apollo.
I recently reviewed the Apollo high VG DSRT range, also we have had the Due Time and earlier Apollo E-liquid ranges too.
Nicotine Salt is used in a lot of e-liquid now to give a bigger nic hit – especially good for us poor souls in the EU who can only buy maximum 20mg nicotine e-liquid due to the TPD regulations.
The Nic Salt is absorbed quicker and more efficiently so you get a better vape and hit from nic salts – ideal for vape pen kits and pod mods.
These are not designed for Sub Ohm vaping as the nicotine will be far too harsh and the liquid is thin too so you will probably get a lot of leaks as well.
We tell you more about Nicotine Salt E-liquid in our Guide.
I received the full range of 10 flavours to try:
- Melon
- Mango
- Watermelon
- Berry Blends
- Vanilla Cream
- Refresh
- Breeze
- RY4 (Tobacco)
- Tobacco
- Tobacco Menthol
I will be using a Geekvape Ammit MTL RDA for testing these as it is quick to just dry burn the coil and rewick for each flavour.
As always it’s such a personal thing to assess the “taste” of something – our own senses plus the equipment we use can make some flavours more prominent than others. I will try my best however to report back on how close these flavours match the description.
Thank you so much to the guys at Apollo for sending these over to me and as always I will report back honestly on my findings.
PG/VG & Nicotine Content
The bottles I received were 30ml size with 20mg nicotine salt strength.
Outside the EU (in the USA) this range is available in 20mg, 35mg and 50mg nicotine strengths. If within the EU click on the UK/EU Button on the website and these are available in 10ml TPD compliant bottles at 20mg strength only. Click here to go directly to them.
The bottle contains 50% VG and 50% PG this makes the liquid thinner so perfect for starter kits and pod mods.
If you are confused about the terms VG and PG well tell you all about them in our guide.
Melon
Apollo say…
“This flavour is the perfect blend of honeydew melon, cucumber, and mint. The melon flavour is the most prominent, followed by the cucumber, and then a slight back note of mint. A wonderfully refreshing vape for summer!”
I say….
The smell reminds me of nail varnish – sorry but it does.
Blimey I didn’t expect it to taste like that!
Where do I start?
Predominantly minty – like a chewy spearmint flavour – exactly like those white sweets in the wrapper.
Delicious but not getting any melon or cucumber? If this was named “Spearmint Chew Flavour” this would get a 10/10 but it isn’t. It is called “Melon” and the melon is in hiding.
MangoApollo say…
“A fresh splash of citrus and sweetness makes this flavour a fan favourite! It’s crisp, fruity flavour will remind you of warm summer days and juicy fruit slices. The smooth vapour quality makes Mango Peach the perfect fruity flavour.”
I say….
First sniff is a very fruity although sour smell – feels like I should be cleaning the bathroom with this rather than vaping it – let’s hope it tastes better than it smells!
This is more of a real mango taste – not a mango chutney sweet flavour. This is very sour.
Really strong flavour and leaves your mouth feeling like you have just munched a chunk of mango – wow.
There is a slight aftertaste that I am struggling to put my finger on, slightly chemically – like in the 1990s when you drank Alco-pops they initially tasted of the drink they were supposed to then left behind a trail of Turps flavour on your tongue.
This isn’t that bad at all but there is something lurking in the background – you almost expect dramatic music and the lights to dim as it’s sinister and waiting to jump out.
There is just that hint of “Bathroom Cleaner” about this one for me.
Watermelon
Apollo say…
“Our juiciest juice to date. It’s like a watermelon at peak ripeness, when the colour is vivid and the juice drips down your face. Mellow sweetness and you can actually taste the rind. This flavour is perfect to vape at summer barbecues. It smells delicious and produces a lot of vapour.”
I say….
Ooh this one smells juicy! It actually smells of biting into a lovely sweet green apple to me!
This is beautiful and sweet – not a sour sharp fruit taste.
As I have already found with other nic salt liquids from Apollo there are multiple levels to the flavour which you don’t always experience from high nicotine liquids.
Although the smell to me was like apple this is totally watermelon when vaping, absolutely delicious. Sweet but not sticky or sickly, not sour at all. More like a watermelon flavoured sweetie than an actual piece of watermelon.
Having never eaten a watermelon rind (has anyone?) I can’t comment on whether that flavour profile is there or not!
Berry Blends
Apollo say…
“All your favourite berries in a fruit forward blend. This e-liquid combines the mellow sweetness of blueberry with the tang of raspberry and the juiciness of blackberry. Imagine a berry smoothie in vape form. Sweet and delicious with a smooth and rich throat hit.”
I say….
I don’t know if my nose has gone on strike or something but I can’t pick up much smell from this. Just to check I had a whiff of the Mango flavour and can definitely smell that loud and clear – so the Berry Blend flavour must not have any aroma kicking about?
When vaping this there is a flavour thankfully – I was a bit worried they had forgotten to add the flavour concentrate to this hehe!
This is as the description says – a mixture of berries. I am struggling to pick out a single flavour as being dominant.
Bingo – Vimto. There we have it – the taste of this liquid = Vimto.
Vanilla Cream
Apollo say…
“This flavour is like biting into a deliciously sweet vanilla cupcake! One of our top 5 customer favourites, French Vanilla is rich and bold, yet sweet and light at the same time, and customers can’t get enough of it! It pairs famously with a cup of coffee. 100% American-Made E-liquid.”
I say….
Sniff test says – Yum! Technical that huh!
This has a beautiful vanilla smell – reminds me of Drumstick Lollies – rather than an overpowering “car air freshener” style vanilla – phew.
Vanilla is often one of the hardest flavours to get right with e-liquid. I have tasted “great vanilla” and “rank vanilla” liquids in equal measure.
For my personal taste the Apollo Vanilla Cream sits way up there in the “great vanilla” category.
This is an ice creamy vanilla – rather than a musty damp tasting one. Some vanillas can be horrific – this is smooth and beautiful with flavour depth you would expect from a high VG liquid rather than a 20mg nicotine strength liquid.
Excellent work Apollo!
Refresh
Apollo say…
“This flavour has taken the industry by storm, but we believe ours is the standout. A fusion of tropical fruit flavours with an effervescence that makes it taste just like the popular soft drink. It’s a delicious fruit punch with a lot of citrus and loads of vapour. Not too sweet, but enough to satisfy your sweet tooth while leaving you refreshed and hooked.”
I say….
So the description of this flavour leaves me none the wiser – I have never heard of a soft drink called “Refresh”?
Yep this smells of a cooling fruit punch smell, a fizzy one where the bubbles pop against your nose.
First taste is lemonade – almost as fizzy as drinking a glass! What a strange sensation! I have had a few e-liquids which are a sensation as well as a taste – but they have all been high VG liquids which carry flavour at higher watts and are smoother. Never had this with a high nicotine e-liquid – just wow.
Personally I am only really getting lemonade perhaps with a small slice of lime – the fruit punch part seems to be more of an aroma than a taste.
I may have to knock a few points off for the lack of fruit punch – which is a shame as this is really delicious and I could happily vape it all day. It just wasn’t what I was expecting from the description. “Fizzy Lemonade” would be a more accurate description I feel.
Breeze
Apollo say…
“Menthol and mint aren’t quite the same thing – one’s minty, and the other’s a cool, pure sensation. This E-Liquid is made with the latter in mind: pure menthol that delivers an icy-fresh blast you can really feel.”
I say….
So what does a “Breeze” smell and taste like – a question I am sure you have never asked yourself…
The answer if you care is like spearmint sweets. In fact I remember a brand of chewy mints called Soft Mints in a mint green tube – the Spearmint flavour.
And just like the smell this is 100% soft mints -beautiful – even to the point I can almost feel the texture of the mint on my tongue. Wow. Absolutely flipping delicious.
Menthol flavours tend to remind me of really strong mint and cold – like Extra Strong Mints – whereas this flavour is the spearmint – sweeter and doesn’t burn your tongue or taste like toothpaste.
My top flavour out of all this range by far – I bloody love it!
RY4 (Tobacco)
Apollo say…
“One of the most popular flavours in the e-cigarette world is RY4. This full-bodied tobacco flavour includes sweet hints of warm caramel and smooth vapour finish. An unforgettable flavor for sure, and our blend is an instant fan favourite.”
I say….
Many many years ago when I first started vaping, RY4 was THE flavour to buy. I am talking of times when there were only tobacco and menthol flavours to choose from.
I do not have good memories of my RY4 experiences – the smell and taste of chemicals spring to mind whenever I see that name.
Each 10ml bottle was knocking on for £10 which made me even less inclined to experiment as it was pretty expensive if you didn’t like it. In fact I gave up vaping as I hated all the tobacco flavours and was sick to death of menthol. I grabbed the ciggies and promptly sold my Tornado VV kit for a lot less than I paid for it.
So I am over the moon to report this smells lovely! Not chemically but there is vanilla and caramel tickling my hooter.
Taste wise the caramel and vanilla are really dominant and this makes me very happy indeed. Much nicer than the “Nail Varnish Remover/Ashtray/Burning Hair” taste the old liquids would kick out.
Phew was dreading this one the most. It isn’t fully tobacco-ey so those who love really deep aged tobacco flavours will find this too sweet.
Tobacco
Apollo say…
“Most requested in the tobacco genre is a simple, dry tobacco flavour to closely mimic an actual cigarette. Of course no e-liquid is going to taste just like a cigarette, but this flavour is the next best thing.”
I say….
First whiff of this tells me it is a more chocolatey style tobacco and no chemical smell – woohoo – off to a good start already with me!
This is a dark caramel taste with a chocolate vibe in the background. No taste of chemicals or ash trays at all.
In fact I have been a bad girl lately and had a bit of a blip and started smoking on and off and the taste of this liquid smells exactly like opening a new pack of rolling tobacco!
It doesn’t taste like a cigarette – you are never going to get that close – but the flavour is excellent and in my opinion far nicer than a cigarette. Yum!
Tobacco Menthol
Apollo say…
“We have worked tirelessly to create a flavour that will satisfy the most serious tobacco menthol cigarette smokers. This is an all new formula, so if you have previously purchased this flavour, be prepared to taste the difference. You won’t be disappointed by this full-bodied flavour that perfectly balances the warmth of tobacco with the chill of menthol.”
I say….
Sad to say that the first smell of this did remind me of old school e-liquid the familiar chemically smell. Couldn’t detect any menthol or minty fragrance at all.
But when I took the first vape of this the menthol was there like a shot, but not the tongue burning strong minty menthol – this is cold but somehow really smooth? Very very odd.
So there is a similar taste to the standard tobacco liquid above but not as deep chocolate or caramel and there is the cold menthol swooshing across your tongue like a light breeze rather than an icy hurricane.
Another liquid from the range which has totally taken me by surprise and it is another 10/10!
Final Verdict
As you can see a lot of the Apollo Salt Nic liquids in this range scored highly.
When you vape mainly high VG e-liquid you find that to be smooth and sweet. Going back to high nicotine e-liquid seems harsh and chemically.
However Apollo have almost eliminated the harsh chemical nastiness and are bringing out layers of flavour you would think would be exceptional in a high VG liquid – not one with 20mg nicotine and only 50% VG.
A couple of flavours were a let-down – but in general these are incredible liquids. I also loved the Salt Nic versions of the Apollo Boss and Apollo Smoozie range.
We are so so lucky to get products that give such a big nic hit and taste as wonderful as some of these e-liquids. Wow.
